why cant i just bend them back to specs?

Not sure, but thinking that they will just bent right back to out of spec. Once you bend metal, it bends back easier.

Because they are a type of spring steel, designed to hold a particular shape. If you could bend them back to specs, what do you think would happen when you install them? They would bend right back.

To put this in a different perspective, ask the same question about the springs in the suspension, you'll get the idea.
