I would think that they would be only needed for full time track cars, plus they underdrive our already wimpy alternator which isn't good.

I would recommend it if you are REALLY using a bridgeport. Or if you plan on sustaining rpm above 5000rpm all day long. Its not nessessary if you are not going to exceed 7500rpm much. It free's up the water pump from overspinning and cavitation. Slightly less drag on the engine too, but not enough to do it unless the engine is going to be out anyway.
