Any one burning 100% alcohol?

Ok, I was curious about 100% alcohol (race version) in a otherwise stock rotory. I found and read this thread,
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...t=Alcohol+fuel
But it turned into a discussion on E85 and the like. I saw a Tiberion(SP?) once that had a turbo set-up without an intercooler and it ran 100% alcohol and did not need one due to the cooling effect of the fuel.
I have a friend that does tractor pulls with moded out garden tractors. A lot of those guys run race alcohol for extra horsepower gains.
I was wondering what would be needed to run that type of fuel in a 12a and if any one has done it.

When U say otherwise stock rotary do you mean fuel injected or carb'd? NA or force inducted? U wouldn't really see an improvement worth while IMO unless U were running forced induction of somekind. N20, turbo, supercharger etc.... Even then I would suggest E85 because it is cheaper per gallon than methanol.

Basically U would need 20 percent more fuel at idle and cruise and 40-60% more at WOT depending on the degree of forced induction or if you go the NA route.

It would be easier with a carb. Just drill out the jets roughly 20% on primary and 40% secondary. Then you'd need some huge fuel lines and a pump capable of flowing the fuel. You'd need a WB02 sensor programed for alcohol to tune it properly. PLX sells them.

Going FI route you'd need some serious fuel pumps, stacked 255 walbros would work. Then massive injectors... Probably have to add extra injectors to get the fuel necessary. just depends on how much power you are wanting to make.

Alcohol it good because it burns cooler and keeps cyl temps down this is good for boosted engines prone to detoantion. Also methanol has extremly high octane ratings anywhere from 140-160 octane... So detoantion is usualy eliminated when useing this fuel. This means U can slap a ridiclious turbo on something and run 25-35+ lbs of boost w/o detoantion. As long as your engine can take it, retarded power can be made with the stuff.

It has meny problems though. It usually doesn't atomize properly so a really good IGN system is required to ignite the droplets of fuel. In some cases the fuel has to be heated before it is injected.

There is a ton of cyl wash down. Cyl wash down is unburnt alcohol in your cyls (or rotor houseings ) That washes all the oil off the cyl walls. Also the oil is usually diluted with unburnt methanol after just a few runs at the track. So oil changes are very frequent. Also methanol is extremly corrosive. Esp on Alum. So all that alcohol sitting in your engine and oil pan inbetween track visits is corroding the hell out of everything.

Hope that helps...

Well it was a good idea, it just was not worth a damn.
Thanks
