Any carb experts out there?

Ok, I have an '85 GS 12A that is going to be an autox/track car in the state of SC. How much of the emmissions stuff can I get rid of? Which vacuum hoses are needed for operation versus polution control?

There are no state inspections in SC and no smog laws. Most of the vehicles around here could moonlight as mosquito trucks.

pretty much everything can be ditched. If I remember righ the 12a can be simplified to only using 1 vaccum line, and tahts for the brake booster. I could be wrong on that though

keep the brake booster line that plugs into the manifold.
keep the vaccuum advance for the distributor if you want it. i ditched it for simplicity and just rely on centrifugal adfance.
ditch/plug/cap everything else.

In regards to the rats nest, what if you want to keep your AC. Do you have to keep any of the nest for that?

Secondaries, what? The rat's nest doesn't have anything to do with the vacuum secondaries on the carb, are you describing something else?

Good luck finding those lines for the secondaries, they dont exsist!, its all internal on those Nikki's. Just run the B-booster line and remove the spring for the secondaries.

absolutely none. It just simplifies things and cleans up the engine bay.

Don't remove the secondary spring (just one spring), it will suck. If you want you can cut it down about to about 2/3 of its normal length, but it doesn't make a whole lot of difference, I'd say it's not worth the trouble.

Isn't that a lot of work for nothing then? The writeup sounded like a pain in the butt.

I'm not sure it's fair to say "absolutely none".

Beyond that, the simplicity is key, and if you're interested in ever installing an aftermarket carb you have to do it anyways.

BTW, it's an easy job - a couple hours max.

i dont see any advantage over vacume control

in fact I think vac has quite a bit of an advantage since it opens the secondaries based on engine load rather than RPM
