Another Confused Tranny Compatibility Question

Alright guys, so you all know about my seven being crunched, balh blah blah.

I am going to go ahead and do that S4/S5 NA Swap and then swap the rest of the goodies over from my RX7 into teh GSL-SE body I have.

Big question though, and running through the archives only made me more confused so I need an actual member to explain this to me.

My plan is to just grab an S4/S5 NA engine, drop it into my GSL-SE using the original corssmember (That should work no? Bah not the point anyways) and then mating my 5 Speed Manual Tranny from my 1982 RX7 to the new engine.

My question revolves around the tranny and flywheel really, since as far as I know the tranny should bolt up perfectly fine.

so here goes-

1. Do I need to change the flywheel from the 13B engine?

2. What size will I need for the Engine to match my tranny?

3. What the hell is this about counter weights, because the archives just confused the hell out of me on that..

Any and all help woulf be appreciated guys.

Oh and by the way, the main reason I am dead set on using this tranny is because it was rebuilt less than 5000 miles ago and shifts like a dream. Be a shame to let such a good 5 speed go to waste you know?

No

83 and up 12-a AND 13-b motors (non turbo) come with 225mm. and 215mm for prior years

A rear counterweight is mainly used on cars with automatic transmission. Think of a counterweight as an adapter when upgrading (manual tranny) to an aluminum or lightened steel flywheel bolts; look below:

Your typical stock flywheel, weight varies from 21lbs to 30 lbs

this is a rear counterweight attached to an aluminum flywheel and installed

Ah.. okay then, thanks a ton wacky.

two more questions;

So I guess unless I am moving up to an aluminium flywheel, I dont need to worry about the counter weight?

Second, can I get by with using a 215mm Flywheel if I ënd up having a hard time finding 225mm from an S4/S5 with a manual tranny?

No, you have to buy the rear counterweight separately as a new aftermarket flywheel doesnt come with it.

yes on 215mm

The 215 mm clutch disc can be used, but not the pressure plate. 225mm clutchs are easy to find, starting at ~$125 new for a complete kit with new pilot and throwout bearings, as well as new clutch and pressure plate. They also usually include an alignment tool, as well.

Well I was talking about finding a decent one in the junkyard since I am on a bit of a budget on rebuilding the seven.. like what ever I can scrounge to actually get the damned engine!

Just use whatever the 13B comes with. If it doesnt come with anything, get whatever it usually comes with.

Searching with these terms "Transmission interchange" gets you all the information. :-)

Hey Wacky, thanks for posting those pics. It looks like you have two styles of aluminum flywheel. The one on your blue and black engine looks pretty much like one I installed the other day. I determined it's not Racing Beat and the bolts actually thread into the aluminum.

It had no bolts so I came up with a set. One of the threaded holes was damaged with threads going all the way through (drilled and cut by the previous owner) so I cut threads all the way through on the other five so I could use longer bolts all the same length for balance and extra strength.
