what is the most simple way to wire up an internaly regulated alternator and still have it functional? ive heard they need the dummy light to work properly but this is a race car and factory guage cluster is gone so i dont have dummy light.

 

On your year, the S4 70/80 amp alts are plug and play. The S5/6 take a bit more wiring

 

so my other question is where exactly do the two smaller wires go? original engine harness is also gone.

No, that's what a volt gauge is for.

not really, no. It needs some drain on the terminal to trigger the charging circuit properly. If no guage/bulb is used, you have to fit a diode in there somehow.
I'm sure if you call a electrician and explain what you want to do they will be able to point you in the right direction!!

 

I would suggest just getting a volt gauge. They are cheap and pretty easy to instal and it takes the guesswork out of it.

 

All you need to do is run a switched 12 volt source to the "s" or the "r" terminal and connect the "b" terminal to the battery.

You guys are making it to hard, forget about diodes, gauges and idiot lights. All the unit needs to see is 12 volts to the terminal. The internal regulator senses from the field circuit and controls the output.

thanks bwaits thats all i needed to know. i did end up just connecting a light though, but why does everyone have to over complicate.

 

ok im bringing this post back to life(As i just accadently exited out of google chrome) so.. again.. my alternator died so i thought.. BUT! the plug that goes into the back of the alternator had 4 wires that are SUPPOSED to run to it.. well 2 are missing.. so i opened up the brain(witch iv hurd it called) little black box on the side of the engine bay drivers side.. and messed with both of the things that look like points.. one gets spark between them and the other does not.. i can get u pictures if u want them but ask and u shall recive.. so PLEASE HELP!!! thank you.. oh and the car is a 79 with a 13B...

 

With a 4 wire hookup on the alternator that tells me you have an externally regulated alternator. The box you are referring to is the regulator. Chances are you need to replace the regulator.

If you meant the plug on the wire harness was a 4 wire plug but the plug in on the back of the alternator has 2 terminals, then you need to run a switched 12 volts to the "R" terminal - then check for 13.5 to 14 volts output.

Need help with my alternator setup! The car is a FC with FD REW engine.

Right now the battery is behind the passenger seat. From the battery I have a large cable with a manual power switch that runs to the starter. From the starter to the side of the fusebox (FC) and from there to the alternators big terminal. From the upper one of the small terminals I have a small wire running back to the side of the fusebox.

I get no power from the alternator.
