BTW - if you put in a v8 you probally should remove the rx7/mazda emblems too. And if you run into a rotary owner.... don't open your hood if you want to keep him as a friend. I still can't get over people sighting handeling as an issue.
With the propper atention to the suspension (which most of us FB owners upgrade anyway) the v8 7 will still be a great back road friend. |

I like sitting back and watching the feceis fly back and forth, rotor vs. piston show me an FB v8 swap that will keep up with my RX on any track. and it will dis-prove your theory. a Light weight well handling sports car powered by a V8, would be fun, Just not in an RX-7. it is a sacriledge thing. |
Where is Fort Wankel, lol. No, seriously where are you located and is there a track close to you. I've posted before about wanting to compare a well sorted V8 conversion to a well sorted rotary.

A few of us rotary guys kinda acted like a club sorta deal so it has been dubed as "Fort Wankel" I too would like to try any sort of friendly competition. Maybe we can find some one with a V8 swap with out crazy mullet exhaust who will come to Rotary Revolution and not pop the hood long enough to get out on the autoX and road-race course... they have out-lawed the non-rotor RX's at this event, but if you walk softly, know one will ever know. |
My exhaust is louder than I would like but not HEY LOOK OVER HERE, loud, but that's on my possible to do list anyway. It's (2)2 1/2 into a single 2 1/2 pipe --cat---stock type muffler for random vehicle (read exhaust shop special). Otherwise she look like any other FB with 16" rims. Hell I might throw the stock -SE's up there. My car is defenatly not over the top but I don't want to drive it that far.

To those who feel that a V-8 would change the handling of the 7 you should go to grassroots motor sports. They hold a competion every year in Fl. They set a budget.....( forget at the moment but I think it is around 2k), then they race their cars. Road and strip. Naturally the V-8 kicks it in the straight line, but, wait....they also finished top 5 out of 10 on the road course. So I think that would disprove the theory. Oh, and yes they do have FB's with V-8's competing. I'm doing this because because I don't want the car to go to the junk yard, and would rather spend 1200 to keep it than let it go. Will keep you posted on how it handles after the swap, but, Henson Super cars has also done this with the FB and report no drastic change in Handling. We will see. |

Brianhsval, I say go for it. I personally wouldn't do a v-8 conversion, but hey it's your money and your car and we do live in a free country, so I wish you the best. I think all of this is male, macho, ego driven, who has the fastest car, the best handleing car, best looking car. I think if the truth was know we would all wish for those things being the "real men" that we are. I am 51 years old and still haven't left my first childhood, so that's why I like the RX-7's. If I had an extra $30K I would probably buy a RX-8.

I have been looking in to doing the 302 swap for sometime now but really talked myself out of it due to the hidden cost involved. if you really are hell-bent on doing a motor swap to a piston motor look in to doing a ford 2.3l turbo coupe swap.. they can make tremendous amount of hp and you can still keep the weight distribution about the same as having a rotary engine.. me personally, im going to stick rotary you can make the same hp for the same amount of money and not be a rotary sellout.

I don't really think that I am a rotary sell out. As stated earlier, I bought the car as a toy to play with. I knew nothing of a rotary motor when I got it. Hell I couldn't even spell it much less tune it. I learned alot from certain people on this board as well as mazspeed.com. I enjoyed kicking piston ass without pistons! I am not bashing a rotary nor am I leaving the rotary community. I am just trying something different to keep the car. I have found another first gen with a blown 12A in it. I don't know the year but it is an LE model and is not in bad shape. I look to be in it with a ported rotary in the next year. This is just for the here and now.
RRTEC, thats the compition that I was refering to! When I get this job finished feel free to visit Huntsville at one of the autox events and I will be glad to let you drive it and see for yourself IF there is any difference in the handling. I don't plan on upgrading the suspension at first so you will get to feel first hand how it will be and the differences if any. |
Huntsville isn't a bad drive from me, i did it in 2 hours a couple weekends ago.. That "LE" you are refering to would be a 1983 Limited Edition, silver with red interior and a red pinstriping down the side.... They are very rare! Only 5,000 made.
Pick that bad boy up. I don't know if I would feel comfortable driving it but I would ride in the passenger seat! I May comedown this summer, keep me posted and I'll make the trip one sunday morning to autox, maybe my dad will drive the miata down and run too... |
