To all in the 1st gen section who helped me.

I want to take this moment to thank everyone who helped me with my SE and making it the best car that I have ever driven. To Jeff20B, man you have been great! Thanks for ALL the help and advice. You made this one of the best experiences that I have ever had with a car. To slashdawg........Thanks! To everyone here on the 1st gen sectoin of this forum, you people are the best!

With that said, I must say it is with sadness I must say farwell to my 13B. No, I am keeping the car, just not the motor. I have decided after much time and restlessness, to drop a V-8 in it. I know, I have read the flames on this subject TO many times, but, I have spent alot of time trying to find a motor for this car. At this time it just isn't in my financial budget to be able to stay with the rotary that I have come to love. I am left with only 1 other choice, and I am NOT letting this car go to the bone yard! It is $$$ cheaper to drop in a V-8 then it is for me to stay with a rotary that is why I have decided to do this. When my $$$ gets straightend back out then I will buy another 7 and drop a 13B in it. In fact I have had my eye on another one for the last year.

Cradle, Peejay, sterling, you guys are the best! I mean that, and thanks for everything.

I am not leaving the forum, unless I get banned for this sacrilidge, but I just wanted to let everyone know what was happening with the car. If there is anyone who needs parts I will be glad to let them go when I tear it down. The rear housing is shot, and the front is probably unusable also, but everything else is fine. I will keep you guys posted.

Thanks again,
Brian

you thank us by dropping a v8 in the car?!?!??!

How do you know shes a witch? SHE LOOKS LIKE ONE!!!!
BURN HER!!!!!

rotor vs. piston 01-29-05 02:12 PM

Not sure all of what you have done to your car but depending on what you're after you might be better off getting another 13B in there. While it can be cheap to drop a V8 (ford or chevy) it's all of the little things that add up. Just do another math check before you tear down your 7 thinking it will be cheaped to drop a V8 in it. I have a "spreadsheet" of sorts of my cost if you think that will help. I did buy most everything new and that's what got me. So if you have good salvage yards around you and have the time you will get out cheap.

Are you going with a Ford or Chevy?

Jeff20B 01-29-05 03:23 PM

You're welcome. I wouldn't be able to help you with any V8 install questions though.

Rotaries are cheaper to deal with and build for power than piston engines. Your V8 conversion will either never get finished, or will cost way more than you had anticipated. I'm not sure where you got your pro-V8 info from, but I don't think it came from the 1st gen section. Even peejay, the piston loving rotary lover, says the only reason he's into rotaries is due to their cheapness (or something like that).

I'd never install a piston engine in a rotary powered car. Heck, I've installed rotaries in previously piston powered cars. I just like the rotary better than a boinger. I'd do a forced induction 13B or even an NA 20B over any V8. Maybe my experience is unique, but I'll have a running 20B for less than the cost of any V8 conversion... probably. I'll add it all up when I'm done.

I agree with rotor vs piston, i was actually looking at doing a chevy swap myself then i realized its a endless money pit, you need a engine, tranny, intake, carb, whole new ignition, different rear end to handle the power, custom driveshaft, need motor and tranny mounts, low profile headers, larger rad, custom oil pan to fit, trust me it all adds up quickly if you want a reliable rxv8. But if your sure you want to do it head over to www.grannysspeedshop.com this site has kits that contain everything you will need.

brianhsval,

i'll meet up with you in the finish line.... someday.....

wise decision you made :bigthumb:

rotor vs. piston 01-29-05 05:03 PM

http://www.grannysspeedshop.com/ <-- that's where I got the custom parts I didn't make myself.

Keep in mind that I would do it again, and will as soon as my life settles. I didn't think it was going to add to what it did. But I'm happy with it. Also check out http://www.torquecentral.com/forumdi...?s=&forumid=11 if you haven't already and get a feel for what the fb guys there had to go threw and such.

rotor vs. piston 01-29-05 05:08 PM

The money pit is only as big as you make it, that's with ANY car project. Some people (like me) can never be done. The only thing I "need" right now is to get a good paint job on her. But of course I still would like to do "this and that". It could be a DD but where I live I just don't want to, if I was back in rural NC the thing would rarely get a break.

Brianhsval 01-30-05 02:05 PM

Well, this I will say. I was searching granny's along time ago when I first got the car. Yes, it can be a money pit, but like stated already it is only as deep as you let it get. I already have a doner car with tranny and motor, so that part is out of the way. As far as the radiator goes, the SE original has been used for this, however I was going to upgrade it anyways and will get the one from the doner. The oil pan and driveshaft will come from granny's. I also have a friend that is in on this project who works in a machine shop and is willing to help fab whatever I need. I am not doing this to get some 500 hp out of it, I am just doing a swap so I am keeping the SE rearend and suspension. I

Ya i heard the rear end won't even hold 250 hp for long so plan on replacing it. I was turned off the idea because of the 1600 dollar cost for the deluxe kit... For that kind of money you could make a monster rotary. For the price of the whole piston conversion you could turbocharge a rotary... I dunno i guess it all depends what way you wanna go, personally i enjoy working with the rotary. Around here it seems that you can get a fully rebuilt rotary with low mileage for around 800 dollars. Sure it wont be a straight line monster but your car will be back on the road.

Tom 01-30-05 05:21 PM

I would imagine a 4port 13B with a good size streetport and a supercharger would be less than a full blown V8 swap, after you add in all the miscellaneous costs.

mar3 01-30-05 06:12 PM

And you wouldn't have the "150 lb deer on the hood" effect on over-all handling, either....make a great straight line dag racer, though...

Rx7carl 01-30-05 07:00 PM

Good luck with the swap. I think the Ford motor is lighter, but a SBC is ALOT cheaper to buildup. I'd go Chevy (also cause I hate Ford). :D

RRTEC 01-30-05 07:14 PM

This is what happened because I din't sell you my motor? Oh well good luck.

Sterling 01-30-05 10:31 PM

You'll be back to rotary in no time. ;)

you hate ford even though they bailed mazda out and are probably the only reason mazda didn't file for bankruptcy?? Heck they are the probably the only reason we have the renesis engine to look forward to. :D

You, sir, think to much of yourself. LIke I said I have been reaserching this since I bought the car 2 years ago. However, as far as the motor goes........well, I will say, that was a shady way to try and cunduct a transaction and I will leave it at that.

IanS 01-31-05 04:52 AM

Uh oh..... Good luck on the car Brian. Make sure and post pics and some vids of the crazy burnouts.

Yeah, because everyone here in the Mid TN area knows how shady Trevor is.

Get your V8 and move on.

Shady way? You contated me after someone had sent a deposit, I said if he didn't finish the transaction I would contact you... Yeah I hope your "shady" comment was as sarcastic as my "thinking too much of my self post"...

Will the real slim shady please stand up?

AS I said good luck with your pushrod install.

Brianhsval 01-31-05 01:36 PM

You sir contacted me with the offer of a motor. All this in PM mind you. While trying to agree on a date to pick it up you then inform me that you had a deposit from another person. When you sell something you should have enough respect for the people that you are dealing with to deal with them 1 at a time. I can see that by your response that you are to young to realize this. It wouldn't bother you in the least if 2 people showed up in the same day to purchase something from you. Each thinking that they are there to buy an item. You however are one of those who would be more inclined to sell to the highest bidder after that. Bad horse trading and a bad way to try and conduct a transaction.

You

RRTEC 01-31-05 01:44 PM

That is total horse crap... I contact you about a motor that was POSTED ON THE FORUM FOR SALE SECTION, You contacted me several days after I PM'd you, a lot happens in a couple days, I had 17 people contact me about the motor, 3 of you were serious. The first one to make the payment of $150 plus shipping was rs_1101 who now owns the motor. Just because someone says they are interested does not mean they will really show up.. How are you supposed to sell something without entertaining all offers? RS came up with the asked for amount first and he got it.. First come first serve. I don't appreciate your slander, and I may be young (23) and a father of two.... but I am and honest person who has sold to lots of members with NO NEGATIVE feedback. I pride myself on making clean transactions for both sides. Your comments were uncalled for..

they used mazda as a tax shelter. so its a win-win situation. ;)

Brianhsval 01-31-05 01:52 PM

No they realy aren't and it is one thing to entertain other offers as long as they ALL know what is going down. I realy couldn't give 2 shits less about it as I have already stated. I would have said nothing if you would have not made your smart ass remark. As is when I did comment I kept it short. As for the PM's you contacted me about a thread I started in the for sale WTB section. I realy wish you would drop this and learn to do buisness differently thats all. I wasn't bustin on you till you took it and ran with it. Leave it alone it has nothing to do with the thread and you were no help to me whatsoever. Learn to walk away.

RRTEC 01-31-05 02:01 PM

I am going to leave it alone, my original post on this thread was lighthearted and accepting of your Rx-7 blastfamy. You started it. (i'm telling MOM.) I'll be the bigger man and finish it. I race every other sunday at the nashville superspeedway durring autocross season if you ever want to race your V8 monster against my rotary powered bumble bee.... I'll be there.

Cheers

trevor
