Air Filter Question

Ever since I finished my '85 GS (6 port 13B, Holley 650 double-pumper on top of a Camden supercharger) I've been using an Edelbrock triangular foam air filter, primarily because it was all I could find that would fit under the hood.

A while back I bought a nice K&N 14" drop base filter. But I had Adjust-A-Jets on the Holley which broaden it's stance and interfered with the drop base. This week I decided to do a rebuild on the Holley and removed the Adjust-A-Jets so now the K&N filter will fit.

Now the problem is that it's still just slightly too tall with the 2-13/16" element it came with and will rub on the underside of the hood. So here's the question: Will I get enough airflow if I buy a shorter element? I can get a 2-5/16" or a 2-1/2". I'm not concerned about losing 4 or 5 hp. But if it's going to be more like 10-20 hp I would be concerned. I'm pretty sure a K&N Extreme lid would solve the problem, but I'd like to avoid that expense if possible.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Rich

Consider a gm hei offset base. I'll look for mine and see how well it fits on one of my holleys.

BTW, the triangle foam filter doesn't flow well and is a fire hazard.

In addition to this, they also deteriorate rapidly and don't filter properly.

Yea, that's why I've always wanted to get rid of it, because of the fire hazard. Although I've read it flows quite well, but don't know that myself.

I'd really like to avoid the expense of a whole new unit. It's been long enough ago that I bought this one that I don't remember the cost, but I know it wasn't cheap. Hell, the reusable elements alone are almost $50!

Does your car pull well past 7500 rpm or start to fall on its face at some point?

She's always pulled hard as long as I have my foot in it.
