air filter box, vacuum HOT AIR intake? WTF? Help!

Im an experienced domestic m,echanic, but new to rotaries. I noticed the air box with all 20,000 of hoses was a little odd. THere is a flap that looks like it closes when you hit high throttle, and then lets in the hot air? What should I do with all these hoses? As of now my air filter is dirty as a rat so its off. Wow, the four barrel and no filter box sounds rotor-licious. When I put on a K&N, should i hook the hoses back up... or like weld it shut or what? I dont know what all these hoses do.

Do a search on rats nest removal. if you do this, it will get rid of all those wires, but your car will no longer be emissions legal.
That flap is the cold start assist. Runs warm manifold air into carb when the car is cold. Ditch it.

That flapper (black plastic one in the snorkel) is connected thru a linkage to a bi-metallic spring inside the airbox. On cold days, the flapper is closed, causing the engine to suck air thru the little hose that goes to the exh manifold (heat stove is the correct term). When the car warms, the flapper opens so the engine can breath cooler engine compartment air. The purpose of this system is to allow the car to warm up faster. It is also a MAJOR restriction to airflow into the carb.

Do NOT run around with no air filter. Its not worth wearing out your engine. And it will wear out much quicker.

ive been enthusiasticly driving my 7 every day and last week thye temp dipped bad , car really run craappy starting about two minutes into warm up , it would miss sputter surge wander it was patheitc, when the choke let go it would stall, the problemwas the riser tube was off the manifold and i put it back on and walla itwarms up much better, its been in the 20,s here and damp got 8 inches already today, so it definately does what is intended, so its a toss up , reasonable warm up driveability , or all out max performance? i believe that if i was not driving it dailly id ditch the stock box in a hurry, but mother nature urges me to leave it be, trev

I have had my snorkal stripped, and punched out for about a year now. Never have any problems getting it to warm up.
