Again: GSLSE Rear end in an 83 Base?

I've searched but i'm stlil a tad confused. I read one thread where someone stated that the 1983 has the updated (larger) driveshaft flange.

basically, GSLSE rear end in a 1983 base..will it work w/o changing the driveshaft?

So if i purchased a GSLSE rear end, would it be as simple as bolting it up and getting the needed brake lines? On top of that what model brake lines would i need? GSLSE?

Thanks
Danny

Ok, its valid question. Everthing else will bolt up including brake lines except Im not sure if the 83 driveshaft flange will mate to a GSL-SE 3rd member's flange.

I said im not sure as I dont have any 83 driveshaft to test fit on a SE 3rd member.

New one is about $350, however I am off tomorrow and there is an SE in a local junk yard. I can run by and see if it is still in it. Probably can grab it for $50. Let me know.

Brian,

Thanks for the offer. I'll just pass on this GSLSE rearend and wait a GSL one. Id on't want to deal with the lug change either at the moment.

UGH! The 83 driveshaft is the EXACT SAME PART NUMBER as the 84-85 driveshaft for all models. M026-25-100.

'83 was the year they changed the driveshaft and companion flange; '84 was the year they changed the axle and housing size. Bolting an '84/'85 rear end of any sort (S, GS, GSL, GSL-SE) into an '83 model does NOT require a driveshaft swap. Obviously, if a disc-brake rear end goes into a drum-brake model, you still need the E-shaft cables up to the clevis/pin connection inside the framerails, but that is all.

blake, thanks for the clarification!

blake, can you also tell me exactly what part i'd need for the brake lines? Do i need the GSLSE brake line from that point?

Also, do you know if the factory master cylinder/prop valve is suitable?
thx!

83 driveshaft should work with SE rear end.

I used my stock Master on my 82 GS with no problems for over 6 months with my SE f/r suspesnion swap until it finally gave up do to normal wear. I replaced it with a SE unit along with the distribution block I got from the SE donor car. Theres no need to change it right away in other words, but some say that the the proportioning might be off. I did'nt notice any difference however.

The proportioning valve is also the same part number. It's the MC that is different (drum model holds residual pressure on the rear line). No big deal. I still have the drum-specific MC on my '83 with disc rear end. The only annoyance is that it tends to make a groaning noise when backing up but that goes away after the pads wear down a bit. It's not a safety issue.

As for the brake lines, you won't need to do anything. There is a single rear line that goes from the body to the axle, which is then split off. That line, IIRC, is the same for all models.
