After a roadtrip

Well after replacing the clutch in my 1980 rx7 I drove it across the state to my college about 200 miles away. On the way there it became very aparent that for some reason I didnt appear to have much power until I reved passed 3k. I'm not exactly sure what might be causing this problem, any ideas?

You have to break in your clutch for a while. Usually 500 miles. It could be slipping or something

how long have you been driving this car? Had you driven it before you replaced the clutch? My car doesn't have alot of power till about 3 grand, but it's not a big deal. I think its normal. Has good power up top. are you having problems in 1st and 2nd gear or 3-4-5 gears. My car has no issue accelerating from idle. but if I'm below 3 grand 3rd gear or higher its not much to talk about. it will accelrate still just not like the top end. Maybe it was easyer for the engine to rev when the clutch was slipping?

did you replace your tranny seals, and pilot bearing while the tranny was out?

I replaced the clutch as soon as I purchased the car because it was not drivable. I didnt replace any of the seals, but I feel more comfortable hearing from another fb driver that theres a significant diffrence in power after 3k. I was talking to my dad about it and he seems to think that it might have something to do with the carborator's 4 barrel system, in that the extra 2 barrels only open after the car reaches 3k rpm.

That and a 12a really only produces power waay past 3k. It isn't a v8 man, 4-7k is where you find the power...

Plllleeeeaaase don't tell me you havn't heard the redline buzzer yet!!

Yup, top end is where it's at. Back when mine was still stock, my dyno sheet showed power still being made at 8k!

Thats the joy of the rotary engine. It has basically no low end power or torque. Its when you thrash it you start to have some fun =D

The secondary throttle plates in the carb are vacuum operated and do not open unless there is enough load on the engine. If you really stomp it from an idle, they will not open. If you really stomp it at 4-5K RPM, you'll feel them open. Go to www.sterlingmetalworks.com to read a ton of info about the stock Nikki carb, how to tune it, and what you should replace it with when the time comes for more oomph.

thanks for the link it'lll give me alot better perspective on tuning the carb. I tried messing around with it, mostly trial and error, but maybe after reading this i'll actually know what i'm doing

If there's a Nikki carb Guru, he's it. Read it carefully, and a few times over. Take it step by step and slowly and you'll have her running great.

You'll never hear the redline buzzer on a stock 80... They were not part of the factory build for that year.

So don't blow your motor just trying to see if the buzzer goes off.

I run my rpm's up high all the time. not sustained, but when I'm trying to play with my seven, I shift at about 7500. usally in 1'st sometimes in 2nd and 3rd I shift at 7K or before. I'm usally up to 55 by the end of secound. 1st gear is really hard to shift on time it runs out fast. I'm not trying to blow her up. She likes it rough. Do 83 have redline buzzers? I've never heard mine. as I said before I'm high reving.

well, remember with THREE catylitic converters, the low end power is a little choked. but with 53K original miles, there's no reason to modify it in any way. just maintain it and enjoy it the way it was emant to be enjoyed. you really do have to rev the engine to get the most acceleration enjoyment out of it. peak torque of 105lbs/ft comes on at 4K rpm and your 101hp comes on at a lofty 6K rpm!
