Thumbs down after 166,000 miles she blew!!! BUT IT's ALL good!

I blew up the engine yesterday...

I had just installed an old style oil cooler, and electric fan and done some adjustments.

(I used 15W40 oil --what I had at the shop at the moment-- and overreved her)...I knew I should have bought 20W50.

I will check compression today but even with some ATF, she started up but it won't idle and and sputters big time over 6k...deep inside I hope it blew...so that I can PORT the crap out if it too...HAHAHAHHAH

You're telling me. I used to hold my old engine way past 8000rpm when it was on it's last legs but the bloody thing just kept going.

When I finally pulled it down I discovered one cracked apex seal(still intact), chatter marks and chrome flaking off all over the housings and every other part was well below spec.

Makes me wonder how the hell it went so well with a broken seal.

it might not be blown ... i drove to DC once, and while i was there, i got into it with this guy in a 300ZX - after i kicked his *** - the motor would sputter and spit and fart and i started to **** bricks, thinking that i'd blown it up.

after i drove back to my brother's house, i went outside like, every 20 minutes or so, just to see if it would start and it started but would not idle well ... (i wanted to cry! ) ... anyway ... i was leaving to go back home the day after that, and when i went out that morning, it started up fine and ran strong all the way back to NYC. and it stayed alive up until i scrapped the car in july of 1999. still have it in the garage ...

i can't explain it and i still don't know what the hell happened ... but maybe whatever demon inhabited my engine back then, is in yours now.

hope everything works out.

Flooded carb and/or boiling fuel...seems like the electric fan I put is not blowing the heat away from the carb/intake manifold...took me a while to figure it out but I saw the gas flooding the secondaries and bubbling...both sight glasses were filled to the top too.

I lowered the fuel pressure, and will intall a heat shield...

I guess the header is running a lot hotter too because I ported the intake manifold and now the car is a bit leaner...it's stoich now at idle and not rich like I had it before.

Well I guess I picked up a couple of horses with these mods...so tomorrow I'll let you guys know how it went....

Man I still wish I had blown that sucker!!!
