Advice needed on what's a "mod"

Hello. I have 1984GS unmolested from AZ with 53,000 miles on it. I plan on keeping the car original both interior and exterior except for perhaps a few mechanical upgrades or exhaust.

My question is, the current radio doesn't work. I'd like to put a very nice up to date system with CD player etc. Now my question is: Would you put this in the dash or is that too much of a modification on an original car and would ruin the interior look ? Would it make it look too modified inside? My other option is to hide a new system in one of the rear bins. This is a lot more hassle, more costly and harder to use. I'm conflicted on what to do here. Your expert advice is welcome!!!

I know the dash changed some time between 83 and 85 but if its like the 83 dash all i did was cut it all the way to the ridge with a file (its all that i had at the time) and cut on the ridge with a utility knife. and bent it off. it looks clean. but if you want to keep an original look you need to get a factory sterio that works If you want a cd player do a line in (theres a thead I saw in the archives) and eather run a cd changer (this would be my choice) or a soucond cd deck hidden in your glove box. all these would be considerd a mod unless you just went back to factory and thats all. I'd mod it. easyest thing is just to run a cd player it looks nice. My dash is all torn apart at the moment or I'd post a pic. but only an rx7 owner will know you had to mod it to fit. and most of us wont look down on you for moding your car.

That's going to depend on your opinion really. Do you want to keep the interior looking 100% original down to the radio or could you live with an aftermarket radio in it? I would just run a 6 disc changer in the storage bin to keep it looking clean and original but that's just me

FYI: my factory stereo works, it's just that I can't move the tuning dial for radio stations.
