Advice on cleaning fuel line??

So I am planning on working on the GSL-SE I bought to get her on the road in the next few weeks. The PO told me there is some kind of fuel pick-up issue. I am going to be pulling the tank and epoxy coating the inside. A new fuel pump, filter and pick-up sock. I am also sending the injectors out to be cleaned and getting a new fuel dampener.

With everything disconnected, I also want to clean out the fuel lines. I was thinking of going to then engine bay, pouring some acetone into the line and then blowing compressed air through it to force gunk/rust/etc out the other end. Any other suggestions?

Acetone, MEK, laquer thinner, all will soften/dissolve fuel varnish. Brake and carb cleaner works a bit better since they come in a spray can with the tube that fits in the spray tip. Be sure to clean the fuel pickup tube in the tank, they often clog with rust. Use the 'fuzzy' pipe cleaner, lol.

I am doing this with my SE as well. Just a warning: the sock, you will either have to clean the one you have, or make one. Nobody makes them anymore. I plan on going to the parts store with pickup tube in hand and see if I can find a sock from another vehicle that will work.

I'm almost positive Mazdaverx7 said you could still order the sock through Mazda. "almost positive" being the key words. Maybe it was only available if you bought the entire pickup assembly? If not, let me know what you find out at the parts store.

I called mazda and they said its no longer available. Rotarycrazy also mentioned he had no luck finding one and made one himself. I plan to hit the parts store tomorrow and will let you know my findings. If I was really set on a correct replacement, wix is just down the road and I'm sure they could figure something out, but not going to that length just yet.

Alright, had a little delay in the fuel strainer issue. Guy at work found one online through RockAuto.com that said it would fit the 85, I was still skeptical, called Rock Auto to verify, which they called Ac Delco and verified, everyone said it would fit. Got it in the mail and what do you know, it doesn't fit. Got a full refund on it though and still have it to through in the pile of random stuff.

I did on the other hand find a fuel strainer that I made work, was the only one the parts store had that would fit over the pick-up tube. I got it from O'reily's, Part number is: FS202 There will be a small gap between the sock and pickup tube, I just used some plastic banding that was laying around to fill the gap and hold it on there. Probably not the best way to make it work, but it works. Now to get the car running...

Sweet, thanks for letting us know. It saves me the hassle of the return from Rock Auto. I don't suppose you took a picture of the gap and how you fixed it, did you?

No unfortunately I didn't. I actually locked myself out of the house and wasn't able to go to work, so I did what I could with the Rx7
