advantages or disavantages of changing the steering wheel

hi
what are the advantages or disavantages of changing the steering wheel? to smaller sportier one like a Grant or MOmO.
i know parking may pose a small problem when going to a smaller steering wheel
i have been doing searches on this and havent found much.

I swapped to a Grant black leather with adapter and horn button years ago. Looks great, but... it is a double royal pain to turn when stationary or barely moving ( no wimp comments, please ).

I plan to go back up in overall diameter, yet retain the sporty looks and extra leg room by getting a "D" shaped MOMO MOD 27 Racing Steering Wheel (large round except across the bottom). I've actually driven a car with that exact wheel and it is exactly what I'm after.

Aftermarket wheels look & feel SO MUCH BETTER than stock 1st gen ones! I have a mahogany Dino in one 81 7 at about 12.5 or so. Had a sweet 3 spoke Grant in the 81 GSL I just sold that was a 12. Have a Momo “Course” in the Datsun 240Z at 12.6. Momo comes stock in my Ferrari (no power steering) at 13.8. Sure, you need to be rolling to turn easily. But then again I’m a bodybuilder.

Thats one of the problems I'm having with choosing a steering wheel, I like the original size of the stock wheel and would prefer not too downsize too much...I have felt the difference between my wheel and the 12.5inch steering wheel my friend has in his 7 and I don't like it at all...finding a place that makes a size close to the original would really help in speeding along my decision.

Too small of a steering wheel yields more disadvantages than advantages.

I changed from the stock steering wheel to a Momo 320mm (12.5 in) wheel, and I found it difficult to steer and see the tachometer and speedometer. I couldn't stand it. Then, I changed to a Momo 350mm (13.8 in) steering wheel, and found it easier to steer, but still have some difficulty seeing the speedometer. It's not too big and it's not too small; it's just right.

Aside from the hub and steering wheel, I use a 25mm (1") spacer to bring the wheel closer to me and so that my knees don't hit the wheel.

Although posting a link with the front page glaring that Ferrarri is getting a bit old. . . .

I'll be nice and not post my opinions on Ferrarris.

I have a 360mm Momo Commander in my car and it's looking a lot better then a stock one, esp. since it's color coded: red and black like the rest of the interior.
But, indeed, the speedo is not visible as it should, and it's a pain to turn the wheel when parking. Especially with 225 tires at the front, which require more force then stock tires anyway.
My father sometimes drives my car, and he doesn't like the momo at all.

i need a new steering wheel badly for my Rex, i have to sit with my legs crossed almost sideways to get at the pedals right.

the D shaped wheels do sound like a good plan, but who sells em for a decent price? saw a few on ebay, but will they bolt up?

I have a Momo Millenium, and it is smaller than stock.

Advantage: Feels great, steering wheel play is minimized - Looks awesome:

Disadvantage: Instrument cluster is partially obscured. I have Power steering in my 7, so the extra steering effort for me is Nil.

I'm planning on getting at either like that or with both the flat bottom and top. Haven't yet decided, but glad to hear that someone else is into wheels like that as well.

How do you sit with your legs crossed almost sideways ? And if you do, pray tell how you can reach the pedals ? Do you have pics ? Is this position in the Kama Sutra ? I anxiously await your reply.

I think the position resembles your avatar, David....

Heh.

Anyways, back on topic, I have a MOMO wheel that is 12.5", IIRC. I love it. It makes it feel like I'm not the captain of a boat, but, instead, piloting an actual sports car. Since I already have to have the seats all the way back and leaned back (I'm 6'2"0, the gauges aren't really blocked from my view. However, I need either: A) find a new one -or- B) get mine re-wrapped because the sun has caused the leather to crack and most of the red stitching is gone.

6'2" here, too.

I'm the only person to ever drive my car, but how many times have I gotten in and tried to move the seat back a notch knowing full well that it is already all the way back and has been for many years.

lol, i meant more like i have to sit with my legs over to the right side to get at the pedals right without bumping my knees on the wheel everytime i shift.

Is this better:

http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/679438/4

Check out my Miata w/ the Momo "Race" which works well in a 7 too at 13.8. The ergonomics of a modern Italian wheel w/ fine leather are far superior to stock 7 wheels. I loved my 3-spoke Grant too, which you can find at Pep Boys. I’ve actually seen a Grant in a Ferrari.

The local stores here don't have adapters for anything earlier than '85, so I am struggling with the same dilima. I want a grant, but, can't find an adapter.
