about to purchase a 1984 rx7

I am about to purchase a 1984 rx7 the body is mint and has all the badges. The owner thinks its a 11a engine but from what everybody is telling me its a 12a (cause the 13b is fuel injected right?)the problem is according the owner is one day he was driving it and shut it off when he went to start it again it wouldn't turn.He then went on to tell me the next day he tried starting it it fired right up but had no power. Is there any way to tell if the motor is blown or not?Either way im still buying it.

Well there is no 11a motor...its a 12A...and your you are right that the 13B is fuel injected. Ans for that problem it could be a couple of things. I know there are more experienced veterens on this site tha know more tha nme but you should start looking at maybe any type of vaccum lines that might have been disconnected or possibly a fuel delivery problem.

1st, it's a 12A, not an 11A, it says the engine size on the housings, right above the spark p;ugs, kinda hard to miss, lol. 1st thing to do is a compression test, ghetto test is to pull the top plug of a housing, crank it over and listen for 3 even whooses, do one plug at a time. Next best test is to use a piston type compression with the shrader valve of removed or held in. You must disable spark and fuel before doing this. Under the dash is the fuse block, pull the engine fuse and remove the rotor from the dizzy. Report back the results and post pics of the body, interior and engine bay. Post the asking price, any maintinance and/or mods done.

Check for rust, this can be a killer. If you can, get the car up on a hoist and look it over, inspect the inside of the rear wheel wells, rocker panels and pull the storage bins. If there is rust, post those pics for sure.

Lack of power usually comes down to 3 items, bad engine seals, leading ignition/ignitor is out or fuel delivery/carb.

Since you're new, welcome to the forum and the Darkside. In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs, carb manual, etc., download whatever you need and start reading. Don't forget to read through the FAQs at the top of this forum.

Thanks for the advice.I will most definatley do what you suggested. I was jut gonna buy the car for the front end and other misc. parts but if i can get it running then I will have 2 first gens and whats more fun then that! Also I looked at the body and in seemed to be in good shape but like you said rust hides pretty good

Never part out a 1st gen unless the body is too far gone, no point in it. If you need body parts, post a wtb. Never hurts to have 2 decent, running 1st gens. You can always have one to drive while the other one is down for repair/mods. I've found having 2 to be very handy with the long term buildup and constant modding of the widebody.

Another thing you can do is pick up a fiberscope/borescope!!!!!
I got one and couldnt be happyer i can take the spark plug out, stick the scope right in the engine and look at the side seals and apex seals to make sure the spring is pushing!!!!
Its not cheap but its a well spent 300 buck's.
TROCHOID is right though two 7's is always better!
HA i still think you name looks better caps'ed troch!
