85 shocks into a 79?

I have some koni front strut cartidges off of a 85, can I use them in a 79?
Do I need to add washers under the struts to fit them to the housings?
Thanks

The housings are different diameters. They're not compatible.

Are you sure? I thought it was only the length that was different. I could have sworn that I've read/heard of people using later inserts in a '79 chassis by simply adding spacers at the bottom of the housing.

I will go measure the two side by side, but I thought they were the same width...

The 81-85 strut cartridge is smaller diameter than the 78-80.
