85 RX7 Gas Gauge Problem

Hi Everyone

Im having a problem with my gas gauge..All of a sudden the gas gauge, goes from FULL and sweeps slowly down to EMPTY, and then it might Sweep slowly up to HALF , or FULL and then sweep back to EMPTY keeps doing this.

Its a lil annoying since I cant tell how much gas I have left..Anybody else had this problem, can you please advise on how to fix this

Thanks

I have the same problem with my 82. Saw a write up on how to adjust the sending unit and tried it, but it still does it. I'm stumped

This happens to me too, although when it's FULL, the gauge still reads EMPTY until I start driving it. Then it'll move up to HALF and jump around...I had the sender out and was manually operating the float, but it wouldn't move the gauge....bad ground?

There is a variable resistor in the sender unit in the tank. It can go bad, but rarely does. THe most likely clulperate is the wire connector on the tank, corrision and rust. Spray with WD-40 and scratch up the connector on the tank and try it then. If its still acting up be sure your wires are not corroded. It CAN happen with wires that look fine and water gets in a tiny hole. A give-away is a very brittle unflexible wire.

Finally as mentioned above the sender unit may need to be taken out and replaced or cleaned up on the variable resistor.

Mine moves around +/- 1/8 from the actual level of gas. Doesnt bother me at all though, when it gets down below 1/4 it stops and gives me the right reading all the time.

I think that there is also a little bit of play where the arm moves along the resistor. That could account for the spontanious readings that I get, as I hit a bump.
