85 restoration update

Just wanted to post a thread in part to say thanks to everyone who answered my newbie questions and let you know how it's going.

Stripping the interior is almost done. Getting out all that old damping nearly killed me, and I wound up sucking in so much dust I was ill as hell for a week coughing it back up. Of course, with it all out she's so loud when I drive her you can't think. There was some rust issues, but only one spot with real cancer, and I chiseled that out.

I'd been reporting air in the fuel line. I'm really not supposed to work on the car in the apt's parking lot, but I did anyway. The grounds crew is always stopping by to see how its going anyway. I replaced all the fuel lines, and also discovered that the fuel pump was probably leaking something like a gallon an hour. Sprayed right out of the outflow nozzle and over the half-assed rewiring job the stoner 2x back owner had done. It's amazing this car hasn't burned to the ground. The pump was also hung in the wrong place, and the protective plate is gone. But it cleaned up okay and since I've tightened the nozzle again it stopped leaking.

The aftermarket oil airbreather doesn't fit terribly well, but the old one was held on with half melted wire treatments so I changed that out.

I'm supposed to get a new starter today and hope that will be the last of the major engine parts I need (knock on wood). After that I need to get the timing adjusted, I'm hoping that will fix her tendency to sputter at 5k RPM

I've found the red seatbelts I wanted, and some of the missing dashboard switches. In march I'm going to redo the damping, with more updated materials and more thorough coverage. April is going to be dashboard month. I've got some carpentry experience and am going to do build it out of cocobolo and macasar ebony. The cocobolo's natural color is an orange red with dramatic black grain, but I'm going to mix 4:1 clear:red enamel to make it the color I want without losing the grain.

One of these days I'm going to get a camera so I can show her off.
