From here and the big list, the consensus seems to be that it is a nice car but that I need to drive it to make sure that the drivetrain is in good condition and the suspension isn't worn out. I'll take some more pics early next week.

My 83 is all original and still passes CA smog just fine with the original cat and 115k. The 85 passed smog last year, all original, with 49k. I have a Bonerz for it, ready to install for performance. I'll probably put a bonerz and header on the 83 this year, for performance.

So, did you buy it, or is the door open for the rest of us? Looks like a good car.

Why would a car rust there? Leaky sunroof?

Could be. My '79 has no sunroof and doesn't have any rust down there, so maybe there's a correlation.

This one has a big moonroof, I don't know if it seals completely but the rubber felt new, very soft and squishy with no cracks. Since it was garaged and in San Diego, it's possible it's never even seen rain.

The FB is notorious for having rust under the storage bins, on the wheel well. Six screws to remove the bins. The water enters through the wheel well, not the sunroof. The rust shows up inside the car first, so just looking in the wheel well from the outside isn't a thorough check for this problem.

Do a search on this topic and you'll have plenty of quality reading.

Love the black interior, SO much better than the red for dash/wheel colour

mine's black too, so maybe I'm biased

ball joint dust cover in one picture looked bad and leaky struts look like the oem units. U can probably talk him down and get some KYB struts and new ball joints. I say drive it and if u like it get it. I got a rusty se for 300 bucks (damn wheel wells rusted and looks like the rear suspension mounts are going too ) Im looking for a clean rust free se now..

I'm in LA right now, money in hand - do you REALLY want to see me beat you to it? j/k man, I wouldn't do that to a fellow rotorhead, unless he didn't pursue the deal.

That's really weird, thats where I'm at. Is it a green SE by chance?

There are only 4 FBs around here to my knowledge... a silver GS (mine), a black GSL, a green SE, and a tan car (I don't know the trim level). If there are more, they're well hidden

When you're willing to come all the way across a country to get a car... then drive it back home... that's love right there. Haha, besides all that, you've got the thing that I lack: money!

I'd like to se you get it and figure out a way to put all your FD suspension under it! I think that would be a really neat project.

Exclamation

Somthing must be wrong with it to have a price that low!
My 93 Mx-3 was 2k
that is too low to be a good buy
i would take it to a mechanic to see if anything is wrong with it first

$1800 sounds about right to me for the location, maybe a little bit of a deal. But if it was in the rusty state of Minnesota it could go for 3k easy. I sold a -se with 135k and a bad interior for $2800 here.

SoCal 7s go cheap.

The thing is, you guys all talk about going to the junk yard and picking up parts for your car, whereas it's pretty hard to find wrecked 84s/85s down here I've found. Just gotta keep checking, I suppose.

I agree. I hardly ever find an RX7s for sale in decent shape (usually they are ragged out- body/interior/ and mechanicals). The laws have changed here, so now salvage yards keep vehicles for just a few months, then strip them of any remaining good parts and crush them.
Some local RX7 people seem to think I payed too much for my 7 ($1500), because of the miles, even though it was excellently maintained and documented. They seem to think it would be better to find one needing mechanical work (engine and such) for a song, and rebuild/replace everything that requires attention- because there in evendently no way to know if a rotary engine is about to blow. I disagree.
