85 GSL SE import figures?

I have found an 85 GSLSE for sale. I have never seen one before. How rare is this car? How many were imported relative to GSLs? Is it worth more because it is a GSLSE? I am new here and would appreciate any information. Thanks

I'm not sure on specific numbers, but I know that the GSL-SE was imported, and most likely made in lower quantities than any other RX-7 of the same year. As for rarity, I've only ever seen two, versus at least 8 other models (S, GS, and GSL), not including my GS (those figures are for the Lincoln, Nebraska area). I know for a fact that there has been some discussion on the board about SE's being quite a bit more rare, especially if they're in good condition (one of those two I mentioned was in quite good condition, the other is in the local junkyard, although even it doesn't look too bad). As for worth, it is worth more, but, from what I've heard and read, its not hugely more valuable, although I'd imagine that its value will increase more rapidly than 12A models (the SE has the larger 13B fuel injected engine) when they begin to be collectors cars (at least more so than they are now). I've heard figures anywhere between 2000 and 3500 for decent to very good condition SE's. Non-running ones go for around 750, but there's a little trick you can do after you buy the car to get it to run if the fuel cutoff relay has been tripped due to a bad ECU (do a search, its been discussed within the last two months or so). I'm assuming, however, that the one your looking at is running. Anyway, on a side note, the '84-'85 GSL-SE is reported to be the most reliable rotary engine ever tosbe made. I hope this helps!

Some 54,000 RX-7s were sold in 1985 in the USA. There has never been an offical breakdown by model. During the time the GSL-SE was made, it has been estimated around 15-18,000 were sold in the USA. Thus it is a fairly common vehicle. in spite of the number having been junked.

Over time it may become a classic, but it is very unlikely to become a collectors' item. The value will continue to decline due to the high cost of parts, and fewer mechanics able to understand rotary matters. Based on past expeience it is likely prices will statr to rise in some 10 years time but primarily for cars in unmodified condition.

More and more RX-7s are being dumped, and you can buy a stock one very cheaply. On the other hand, some people love them to the extent they become money pits with over $5000 going down the hole not being exceptional. One of the advantage of so many being junked is its cheap to buy one as a parts car to keep your daily driver on the road.

If you are a college student, then its a great first car. and has a second hand price which gives great performance for the price.
