Question 85 GSL Engine options?

Im the proud new owner of a 85 GSL auto with 53K orig on the odometer. Ive been a strict honda acura man for the past 6 years, owing a couple different preludes with turbo setups and building a couple LS/VTECS, but im just not educated on the rotory motor yet. Im just curious if anyone could give me any information reguarding turboing this motor. Here a couple of questions I have reguarding the motor itself, options I might persue, ect.....any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Can this 12A carberated be converted to a EFI?
2. Is there a turbo kit available for the carberated 12A, or what would I have to do inorder to turbo this motor? Besides adding more fuel, better ignition ect.....Just looking at pics it almost looks possible to change out ecus and intake manifolds...but I dont really know.
3. How difficult would it be to drop in a 13A and would it be worth the investment or is the 12A a fine platform for making some real HP?
4. Ive seen some V8 conversion kits for the car but im a pretty dedicated import man, but I would do it if the cost effectivness and reliability outweighed that of a turbo motor build?
5. Wheels, wheels, wheels......anyone have any good links for finding a good selection of wheels to pick for this car?
6. What is the largest wheel diameter this car is able to handle? Ive seen nothing but 16".....would 17s be possible or are the fender or wheel well clerences unaccomadating?

Well thats about it for now but I can assure you I will most likely have alot more questions for you well educated rotory peeps.
Thanks Alot,
Mitch

FAQ at the top is the best place to start.

1 Yes
2 http://www.rotaryshack.com/ Can sale you a full kit.
3 13B not 13A, 12a is a good platform, 13b starts you with 35 more HP.
4 there are some 302 cars on here but we try not to talk about them, V8 stuff can be found at www. torquecentral.com
5 Tirerack has two choices. There are some old school stuff available used, diamond racing has some but they are not preaty, Panasports can be ordered, Any thing else is a custom Drill for our Bolt pattern
6 Mazda wanted 13s on the car, God told me to keep the 13s on the car, So all I know about are 13s.

1. you could make your 12A a fuelie but it yould probobly be more worth while to just convert to an injected 13B

2.There are turbo kits around for the 12A but to my knowledge nobody makes them any more so they are very rare. They ocasionaly turn up on ebay.
most of the turbo guys on this forum fab there own setups. If you do a search, you can find tons of info on turboing your car

3. It's fairly streingt forward to swap in a 13B, once again search and you will find lots of info. Both motors have lots of potential.

4. V8s in sevens is a highly controversial topic, but if thats the "kind" of performance your looking for than go for it. I think www.grannysspeedshop.com has some info on this sort of thing.

5. If you swap to gsl-se suspension ect. you will have a wider choice of wheels.
Your options are fairly limited as is. someone else will be able to beter answer this question (all of these questions for that matter) better than me

6. Personally I think anything bigger than 16's looks funny on a first gen. But there are plenty of people running 17's and probobly 18's on here.

Welcom to the forum, you'll love your seven, I guarantee it

6 There have been some threads on bending the fender wells a bit to accomidate 17s, As far as I know it can be done with good results, but I agree with hades12, God told me to keep the 13s....and I am really cheap.

Ok I realize Im new to the site, but after reding this I realize I know quite a bit more than I thought. Im going to start with the wheels. The RX-7 and miata alike handle best with a wheel and tire set up that weighs less than 12pds per wheel. with this in mind I recomend you look into konig helium wheels. Also you the car will handle better on a 15 than a 16 and will still look low pro. As for the engine........nobody likes a guy who puts a v-8 in an import or pistons in a rotary rocket. If you swap for an injected 13b you beat v-8s hands down. I know because I had an 84 with 12a and still spanked v-8s with my clutch slipping.
The 13b should be an easy swap. You will need the ECU and wiring harness. Im not sure exactly what else, but I have been told all the info is on this site. You have made a very wise choice in this rx-7 as there is no honda that could compete, good luck

woah woah woah, slow that horse down for a second there buddy. yeah, light wheels are good, but assuming car will handle better on a 15 than a 16... proove that one to me. also, i have a friend who put pisons in his rx-7, and it's a v-8, and it's actually rather awesome. and i'm a hard core rotor fan (i could never do that to MY rx-7's, but i still think it's cool that some people do). also, if you had an 84 with a 12a that "spanked v-8's" those v-8's must have been either

1) not moving at all
2) badly broken
3) a very bad tasting tomato drink

or you had a VERY modified 12a (turbo, etc)

otherwise, v-8's will usually destroy our rotaries, at least on the strip (but they have a very hard time beating us around curves...)

just thought i'd throw in my $.02
