'85 13B GSL-SE Oil Cooling

Hey guys I pulled a bad one the other day, I got new lines for my oil cooler and i was in the process of installing them and I over torqued them cracking the cooler at the threads. I then proceeded to discover that the cooler was actually the wrong one anyways, it being designed for the earlier under-rad mount coolers. Now here's my 2 questions. 1. How vital is it that the engine oil gets cooled, I know that the oil is cycling through the rotors and gets quite a bit warmer compared to conventional piston engines. 2. Has anyone put an oil cooler in that was not made specifically for the RX7? Say, a normal oil cooler or automatic transmission cooler? Looking around for a new rad for my car is up around the 450 mark. Thinking that there could be a cheaper, just as efficient way to cool the engine oil, I've started asking questions. Any answers?

It is very vital that the engine oil is cooled. Infact the 79-83 rx7's that have the FMOC ( front mount oil cooler) their motors usually last longer and are in much better condition when being rebuilt. Compared to the 84-85 12a motors that had the beehive style. Your motor will not last long without the cooler. Without the oil cooler your apex seals will be shot in no time.

2. I would get another stock fmoc. Buy one used to save some cash. A new one from black dragon auto is around 700 if I remember right. I got a fmoc with lines and everything for 70$ and it cools my 12A Turbo very well! If you cannot or do not want a stock one try getting a bigger one than stock. I would not downsize any.

Yea, get it repaired. As previously stated it is ABSOLUTELY necesary the oil gets cooled one way or another. People have tried other coolers and they just havent been adequate.

Repair should cost well under 100$ probably closer to like 50.

I've got a FMOC for the earlier under rad mounting style, but have a taller rad since I originally had the beehive cooler. I mounted mine in front of the cross bar right in the nose of the car, using the bolts that go into the two tow hooks, some 3 inch angle iron as mounts, and some patience and eyeballing. Had it mounted the way I wanted in an afternoon (or was it the morning) and it looks pretty cool right out front, in my opinion anyway. The only difficult part is getting the lines to snake around the cross bar since its pretty well in the way for any direct path. I ran the front line over the bar and the rear line underneath, and used 2 45* AN fittings pieced together on each line to get everything hooked up nicely. It's a little snug when trying to get the lines onto the cooler, but once they're on there it's all good. And don't bother trying to use anything but the Mazda coolers. They are supposed to be the best at what they do. Good luck to ya
