I have a few questions I am hoping someone can answer. I am looking for info regarding an 84 rx-7 with a targa 7 top. I was wondering if someone knows of the specs on this year, mine is fuel injected. Does that mean it is a 13b or did they make a 12a fuel injected also? Also looking to see how rare the targa is compared to the other models that year. any info or links to info would be greatly apprciated. They one thing I dont know also is what piece comes off, is it the whole roof or just the targa band? just got it, my email is bparke3@yahoo.com, thanks

Sounds like you have the same car as me. If it's a fuely 84 it's a GSL-SE. I have a white 84 with the targa band. Just an aluminum strip across the roof. As far as I know there is no other difference from the regular model.

 

There are two different Targa bands, an early one-piece unit which was installed by dealers, and the three-piece "Targa 7" unit, which I'm pretty sure was an aftermarket part. The Targa 7 attached with double-sided adhesive, but I'm not sure about the one-piece unit. The one-piece unit is satin finished stainless steel. That is what I have on my '80. Here's a pic.

 

Actually there are a couple different versions of the Targa 7 band.
One says "Mazda" on the bottom edge, although I've seen the same band with "Targa 7" or nothing at all along the bottom edge instead.
The second one also says "Targa 7", but is slightly different style wise, with a black stripe near the front edge.

The use double sided tape and a buch of screws. The first two types were sold by Mazda dealers at the parts counter as an owner add-on.

Id bet my *** the are even more scarse than the convertable versions!

But they do look great dont they!

 

Ive seen both in person, and they looked really nice... But its stilnot factory now is it... And somethign about a 'chopped' top scares me...

On the subject of real working Targa conversions, there were some places in Kalifornia that did those as well as convertible conversions on mini-trucks back in the early '80s. I can't remember their name, which is probably a good thing for them since everyone I ever talked to that had it done said that it leaked.

 

I was thinking of buying a trash parts car from the auto wrecker's here and trying out a targa conversion using the plasma cutter, welder, and some new rubber seals.... but then I thought of how much work it'd be... LoL
