AL 84 rear end toasted

I have and 84 that needs a rearend. Will a 86 or 87 rear bolt into place? How the he!! do you get the axels out. I have removed the pinion nut, drive shaft flange, and unbolted the diff case. but it will only come out about 1 inch? what next?

I seen the 86 and 87 and no they dont; But I am still stumped on how to pull the axels and diff out. Does it have circ clips that hold the axles in the diff? And if so how do you get to them?

The axles are held in by the axle bearing retainer. If this is a drum brake housing, the backing plates for the brakes are also the bearing retainers. Pop the drums off, and you will see 4 bolts where the backing plate meets the housing.
If this is a disc brake unit, the retainers are also the dust shield for the brakes, only difference is they only have 3 bolts where they meet the housing.

The 86 ring and pinion are useless. The 2nd gen had a super long pinion gear, and no one even bothers to make optional ratio ring and pinion for them.
On the other hand, the Miata uses the same center section as the 84-85 RX7. They even have the same R&P for the auto trans version. Other ratios are also offered for the Miata (4.10 and 4.30) by Mazda, and there are others offered by many aftermarket companies.

Your best bet is the junkyard, find an old RX-7, or Kia Sportage if you want to upgrade rear end ratio's. Search for Kia Sportage therad on this forum. This is also a good reference site.

You need to use the a slide hammer to get the axles out. As for the differential if your car is a gsl-se you have to use a gsl-se diff as the gs and gsl diff won't fit but the gsl and gs are interchangeable. If you have any questions message me bc i just did this swap on my gsl-se.

got a pinion and diff from and 85; But when I put it back togeather I found out I need a drive shaft; Bad U Joints, by looking at it I take it the joints are not replaceable;
Will the shaft from a 2nd gen work?

2nd gen driveshaft is too short, thanks to the longer pinion.
You can have the driveshaft rebuilt, usually runs around $100 at most driveshaft shops.
