84 GSL-SE split air pipe - is it necessary?

84 GSL-SE split air pipe - is it necessary?

I just installed a new Racing Beat exhaust system. The previous owner of the vehicle apparently cut the end off of the split air pipe (the pipe that goes from the back of the intake to the cat) and spliced in a rubber pipe to an aftermarket cat. The new exhaust has a 2 bolt flange that attaches to that pipe, but I obviously can't attach it because the flange has been cut. I don't want to cut the flange off of the new exhaust system and splice in a pipe and I can't find the pipe with a flange anywhere. I am looking for suggestions. Also, there is no place for the oxygen sensor in the new exhaust. I just unplugged it. Do I need to cut a hole and put it in? This exhaust is the street port exhaust and has 2 pipes all the way to the muffler, but I only have one oxygen sensor. If I cut a hole, which pipe?

Racing Beat streetport exhaust system is sold as an "off road"system so no provision is made for O2 sensor. Car will run fine without O2 sensor input but fuel economy will drop off somewhat with out it. In stock configuration there is a small hose that comes off split air pipe and goes to pressure line for 5th &6th port actuators to feed the actuators a small amount of pressure to open them. Without this connection you will not have auxiliary port operation & will lose some upper end horsepower. Seeing that you don't wish to cut flange on presilencer,you could have an exhaust shop fabricate a flange to bolt to presilencer flange,weld a short section of pipe of correct size to it that you can clamp to your previously installed silicone "pipe".

Regarding placement of O2 sensor.. as it is a 1 wire unheated sensor it needs to be placed close to the engine,look where it was mounted in #2 rotor portion of exhaust manifold. Sensor needs to reach 600 degrees for proper operation to be sustained and mounting further back in exhaust system its difficult for sensor to achieve and maintain that threshold temperature.
