something's wrong on your end. the photos posted all three times and i can vouch for them (the first two) being visible as far back as yesterday. not to mention, he commented on them as well before you posted the third one.

 

Tank is there. Jack is under the differential. Sun was setting so the camera lens adjusted to the light, making the shadow area under the car very dark.

I replaced the fuel filter and pump and primed the line via the jumper wire suggestion and she fired right up! Yah! But the pump leaked because I didn't have the proper sized crush washer, so she sat in the garage until yesterday.

Yesterday, removed the pump and installed the proper crush washer. But she was very difficult to start. Eventually she sputtered to life with the huge plume of blue smoke as expected.

She ran a little rough for a short while, drove it around the block several times. Very nice! Brought it back into the garage, turned it off, then about 3 hours later I went out to start her and she wouldn't start! I smell a lot of gas so I think the engine is flooded. Good grief. Now what?

Does the engine have to crank at a certain RPM to start? My battery is getting weak. I will put the charger on the batt in the "run" position and try again.

What condition are your fuel injectors in Rick? Have they ever been cleaned and/or flow tested?

Charge your battery fully before attempting to start the car again. A weak battery can lead to a no start/flooding condition which sounds like what you are describing. When you get it started again, I would put a good quality fuel system cleaner in the tank and drive the car for at least 20-30 min. This will hopefully remove any deposits in the fuel system.

I just removed all the plugs and they were all wet. The top plug from the front rotor was very wet. Lots of oil, too. So I disconnected the fuel pump and cranked the engine to blow out all the excess fuel (and oil?) as best I could. Cleaned the plugs and now I am charging the battery.

My fuel injectors haven't been cleaned or maintained in any way in years, but I have rarely driven it for a couple years. I will put some injector cleaner in my gas tank when I get her running again. You suggest to run the engine 20-30 min. Will that work at an idle?

It would be better to drive the car under varying load/rpm.

 

Yeah, I knew that was the proper answer. Tomorrow I will put the plugs back in and hopefully it will start without any more hiccups.

Let me know if you need rebuilt injectors Rick. I have a freshly rebuilt and flow tested set of OEM GSL-SE injectors.

 

Bluecoop, if Rick doesn't need them, I'm interested. My 85 GSL-SE is dying/sputtering at load after dropping & cleaning the tank, replacing filter, the pump 3 times, all rubber hoses, the FPR and blowing out the supply and return fuel lines.

Injectors may be the gremlin for me.

Here are a couple pics of my fuel filter and pump project.

 

Sensing my "it won't start" problem was because the engine was flooded, which it probably was, I removed all plugs, disconnected the fuel pump, cranked engine, blew out all excess fuel, cleaned spark plugs exceptionally well, put everything back together, connected the fuel pump, and still no start.

But this time, I noticed the tach does not spike anymore when the engine is cranking (it used to.)

I attached a short recording of my "no start" experience from the cockpit.

Does this look and sound like my problem is (NOW!) an igniter issue?

 

I am going to start a new thread about how to test the igniter on my car.
