my rx7 sputtered when i revved pass 4 rpm until i changed the fuel filter and pump and cleaned out the gas tank....the sputtering seemed like fuel starvation, but most idle problems are due to a vacuum leak...i'm guessing it could be the fuel pump and filter because that was the direct solution to my sputtering problem....after i replaced the fuel pump it started up just fine with some starter fluid and idle speed adjustments....and have you or anyone else messed with the idle speed adjustment?
o and chances are, since your car is an 84, the gas tank could be extremely dirty and gunky like mine...i removed the gas tank and got a radiator shop to professionally clean it (100 bucks)....in the process, i found that the fuel strainer thats inside the tank corroded and its bits and pieces were floating around in the tank and clogging the external fuel filter (my fuel filter was clogged with "sand" and debris that was in the tanK)....i replaced the fuel strainer (30 bucks at mazda)...the fuel pump, the fuel filter because they were all clogged with debris and now my car runs perfect until my clutch went out about a week ago -_-
you can start small by checking if your gas tank is clean...if it's dirty and gunky, it's most likely clogged...make sure your fuel is running smoothly...cleaning out your throttle body with carb cleaner also helps idling problems

+1 on Trochoid's post. There's about ten things I can think of off-hand that could be causing the issue.
Have you done any work to the fuel or air system recently? Are any of the electronics for the EFI changed from stock? Are all the sensors original? What was the car idling at before?
