Question 83-ish 3 speed trans

I apologize if this has already been discussed but I looked around and didn't see it anywhere, so here it goes. Got my 83 GSL a few years back, it has one of the 3 speed autos in it, I always toyed with the idea of retrofitting it to the 5 spd manual until I decided to try manually shifting it and putting some abuse into it. i figured I was gonna trash it anyway once I got the 5 speed. Well, lo and behold the bugger is actually quite the solid brick! It seems to have one of those manu-matic (for those of you that remember them) valve bodies in it, so once I take over the shifting, the power is all mine. I could keep it in 1st gear until it flew apart (or the engine, whichever had enough of my BS first haha) and the upshifts are instantaneous, none of the usual auto lag. The only safety feature that reminds me its an auto is I can't downshift into 1st over 45 MpH, but I have downshifted back to second as high as 85 and maxed my RPMs of course but it took it in stride. This gets to my original reason for this thread, is this common behavior for one of these or has it been modded? I can't find reliable specs or diagrams of this gem anywhere, only the older design 3 speeds and the later 4 speeds. If anyone has any info or pics/links/whatever they could share on this please let me know. BTW pretty sure I have the 17 bolt pan, but can't find serial numbers for the case itself anywhere just yet (still got it in the car).
