83 gsl?????

I have a unique problem.......I think! I cant fiqure out why the f@*k after installing a rebuilt 12a and wiring it all up, my wipers turn on once the ignition is turned to"acc".
This never happened with any other car I ever had and I tried tracing back all the wiring under the dash the harness but nothing. The only way to stop the wipers from turning off while the motor is running is to remove the plug thats behing the alternator. I dont think its a short because a fuse would've blown. Am I right? Maybe a bad wiper motor? I checked the grounds and all the fuses and still nothing!!! Any ideas??? Oh one last thing....I just installed a new alternator thinking it could be that but its still the same! Thinking of removing the wiper fuse and just installing it to a switch!

If you remove the fuse does it stop? Could be a lifted ground somewhere, with the result being that some circuit completes by going thru the wiper motor. If you disconnect the wiper and some other accessory ceases working it may help you. I don't know what accessories are wired "hot" on this car (with the switch completing a ground connection to allow it to work) and which are wired "cold" (with the switch completing a connection to battery power to allow it to work). In the Old Days only the horn was wired hot (so that when the horn switch wire in the steering column frayed thru it would just cause the horn to blare endlessly rather than short the battery direct to ground thus discharging it). But I notice that some wiring diagrams I've looked at the past few years show several hot connections.

With that in mind, it could be, since the wiper and horn switches are both in the steering column, that there is some confluence of current between them there. So, rather than a short it could be a lifted ground. Since modern cars (and even our 20 year olds are modern) have so much plastic and rubber shock mounts they usually run actual ground wires around everywhere so it could be one of those.

Thanks for the info. So am I better off just connecting the wipers to a "switch", because I've been trying for hours and hours to figure this out!

I had a lot of trouble with the switch that controls headlights, indicators etc, there is a thread on removing and cleaing these, I would bet this would fix your problem also as it's all in the same unit.
