'83 12a Black in color air cleaner

I came across a 1983 Rx-7 today that had a black air cleaner instead of the unique pacific blue that dates back to 10a rotary engines.
So I decided to buy it.
No it was not a repainted blue unit.
It has all the same markings on the lid as my OEM and there is a sticker on the snorkle like my OEM unit.
Anybody know anything about Mazda producing a black air filter housing for 12a?

Just when you think you saw it all.

Does it say 6 port on it?

The UK 6 port 12A motors had black snorkels IIRC.

The 6 port 12A engines that are somewhat rare had black air filter housings that said 6 port 12A on them.

NO, it looks just like my US 1983 12a air cleaner housing down to the white dot next to the mazda name. Here, I attached a picture.

yeah, I'd say someone had too much time on their hands and painted it black, and then made a stencil of the original lettering and painted it on again...

You could tell if its repainted.

This was not a home job, a stencil, yeah right.

I will post some close ups tommorrow.

It wouldn't be that hard, to paint the air cleaner black, and just buy the decals and stick them on.

Now, did you buy a whole 83 Rx-7, just because it had a black air cleaner.......or, did you just buy the air cleaner assembly?

The 'Mazda' and 'Rotary Engine' lettering is not a sticker but actually painted on to the black surface. I took a razor blade to my stock blue unit, and the lettering is painted on also. There is a sticker on the snorkel though, for air filter info.

So, does anybody else have idea about this odd looking unit.

No I did buy the car, just a few parts off of it.

Not UK 6 port, but Japanese 6 port. The UK always had what the rest of europe had, but RHD. The only thing that is different between theirs and ours (europe) is that they never got the newer dash (84-85 GSL-SE style) that was on all european LHD 12A versions from 84-85,(aswell as GSL-SE style uprated suspension and brakes) but never in any RHD cars (which did get the suspension and brakes though). All cars officially sold in Europe are 12A, 4 port. 79-80 models had 105hp, the later ones 115hp, or 113 in Germany.
We never got any 12AT (japan only) or 13B powered 1st Gens. However, since the UK has RHD cars, as Japan, there are a few (actually a good amount) cars imported as "grey imports", both 12A six ports as 12AT.
Whereas in Europe we have some US imports GSL-SE's, and of course 13B conversions.
There is also a UK turbo-conversion for the 12A, from Elford and one from TWR. Both are not official Mazda 12AT's, but start as normal 12A, with a bolt on kit.
These Elford and TWR turbo cars are homologated in most EU countries, which means they are officially accepted by Mazda. But: no 12AT, 12A 6 port or 13B powered 1st gens ever were sold by Mazda in Europe.

Hey guys, I should post it on eBay and see what kind of feeback I get. It seems there is a lot of input that comes in when I list items there.

Anybody got a picture of the 6 port unit that is black, if so post it. We don't have 6-port 12a here in the states.

The black 12a air cleaner I have looks the same except the red writing that says "6 port". I am going to call Mazda Comp today and see if the know any stories of US black air cleaner.

I like the air piping coming off the air cleaner snorkle, what is the other end connected to? Can you send a picture of that also? How posible is it to obtain that inlet piping from the 6 port engine? How about one of the lids?

I would guess parts would be very hard to comeby as it was a japan only model AND it was a top of the range car in 82 so I doubt they sold that many

That looks like a Cold Air Induction on the picture. How is the air being piped in? It does not look like he is wraping around in front of the radiator.
