82 RX7 Stock Turbo 11s e.t.?
4 Attachment(s)
I was looking thru craigslist one day and found a 82 rx7 for $300 , decided to take the nearly 4hr drive to san antonio to go pick it up, car had been sitting out in the country for over 5 years, In the state of TX cars over 25yrs old dont need a smog check to renew your tags only a brake and light inspection, My build up begins with turbo 2 side housings, I ported only the center housing to match the outers. I used a set of 91 rotor housings from a n/a motor and installed exhaust sleeves from a turbo model, Im using 85 gsl-se rotors/internals, I am going to need the higher compression to spool up quicker and hopefully gain a few extra horses, I will be using is a stock series 5 turbocharger and exhaust manifold, transmission will be factory one that came with the 12a engine, I already changed the rearend with a 85 model (bigger axles), I will be using a front mount intercooler (bar to plate core) with 2.5 piping and 3inch exhaust, For fuel I will use a msd fuel pump with a mallory regulator and gsl-se injectors, To control all this I will use a microtech LT4 fuel only computer with the old school dizzy, I will keep you guys updated with my progress, pics and videos when I finally hit the track, hopefully I can get the car completed in 4 weeks......:) I want run low 12s maybe high 11s (on pump gas) in full street trim besides bolting on a set of slicks, What do you guys think, Can this be done?

Cool deal. Glad to see another 12A turbo being built.

Good luck getting into 11's. Slicks should help, but not a whole lot more I can think of for traction. |
the only 12A thing is transmission it sounds like.
should be a good build. Splitting up massive paragraphs helps people read it easier. |
its a 13B

Up late, tottaly looked over that. Good luck with the build :D |
Sounds good so far but I would have used S5 rotors and e-shaft instead of the S3 set.

^^Ditto, especially if higher compression was in mind. It'll be quick but I don't expect it to be low 12's quick, seeing as how it's basically a stock 13B turbo. Slicks on an S3 rear end and a 12A tranny will end very badly. Use a Turbo II trans, it's really just a better option. I'd skip the slicks or launch light cause you'll either twist the axles or send the LSD thru the case

also, high compression doesn't help spool, and it tends to hurt power when you start to get into higher boost pressure. Some of the components of how fast a turbo spools are:
weight of the impeller assembly (both the hot and cold side, plus the shat) Ball Bearing vs. non ball bearing A/R pressure differential between the engine side and downpipe side of the hot side of the turbo restrictiveness of the intercooler setup By running high comp rotors what you're doing is making more n/a power before the turbo spools, not changing the speed in which the turbo spools. Turbos run off of waste energy that would otherwise go out the exhaust system. Also, by running high comp. rotors, you're limiting the amount of boost you can run in your motor. There was a writeup in Sport Compact Car about why you don't want to run high comp in a turbo motor, and all of the reasons why. I'll see if I can find it. Anyway, car sounds like it's going to be a beast. To pull off an 11 second quarter, you're going to have cut a pretty good 60' time, and you may grenade your rear end. Best of luck in your endeavours, and make sure to let us know how your first few trips to the track turn out. |

You mention a bar & plate intercooler, but the one in the picture is a tube & fin. They both have their relative benefits, so I wouldn't rush and change anything.

Would a stock T2 (S5) engine in a first gen run 12's? (With things like exhaust and ignition, but stock boost and porting)

OK, motor is in the car....will start in intercooler piping and exhaust system tomorrow, I will post pics soon
|
Engine is installed......
Worked on the car a few hours today, made the holes on the radiator support for intercooler pipes and also started doing the pipes, Im going to work on the car this weekend well see how far I get.......:crzyeye:

Built the downpipe today and also welded the race muffler......

What muffler is that your running? Looks like a good build and a short deadline i'm deffinately excited to see how it turns out for you.
The thing that always confuses me is why people are always using the s5 rotors, for higher boost setups. Sure they are lighter, and you will get some more power, but if your running higher boost, a lower compression ratio means you can feed more air and fuel through the engine making more power. |
Man i like where your going with this,i think the car might be in the 11.85 or 11.95.It will be faster then a 12.00,but good look with the car.

Damn, that is going to be LOUD!!! i wanna hear it!
|
Muffler shown with downpipe is my first muffler made by magnaflow, Im running 3 inch piping all the way back, I will have a magnaflow round muffler outback......
|
Any chance you have a part number for the muffler? I'm looking for similar magnaflow mufflers for my setup as well. Thanks
