82' Help Carb / Vacuum (long post)

I have a Stock 82 with a 12a manual tranny i picked up the other day for next to nothing. Being a rotor head i jumped all over it, but its my first FB, and im having a few problems. I drove it home everything seemed great, it seemed a bit slower then i thought it would be but i just blew that off cause I’m use to my FD.

Anyway, I started driving the car quite a bit and one day getting onto the interstate i kicked down on it, and suddenly it came to life! I mean this thing was screaming, but when i went to shift i hit the clutch to realize it was stuck wide open, so like any carbureted vehicle I kicked the **** out of the pedal a few times, nothing. So I shut it off and coasted to the side of the road. Started it again, started revving out of control so I shut it off again. Started it again and it was fine, so I limped it home. This has happened several times now, most the time when it happens I slap it in 5th gear and just drive it till it decides to calm down (takes about 30-45 seconds). I think the four barrel is only opening sometimes and when it does it sticks….

Here are some things I have done, it idled at about 1200 rmp’s when I got it so I searched on here and got my idle down to about 700-800 rpm’s. I do have a Haynes manual for it and looking through the carb removal rebuild section, I realized some of the linkage wasn’t even hooked up right, and one of the vacuum lines wasn’t hooked up. The car still has all the emissions on it. I made a quick model of the part that was hooked up wrong, and took a screen shot of it. It’s on the back passenger side of the carb, the left is the way it was hooked up and the right is the way it should be, and is now. (See attached Image)

Also the vacuum line for the shutter solenoid to the coasting valve was cut into, so I put that back on.

After putting this all back together I get in the car and start it up, get in to go for a spin and it falls on its face when you get in the throttle, almost making a gargling sound. (Almost like a jake break on a semi, but muffled).

So originally I don’t think the four barrel was opening correctly, but it would open sometimes, and when it did it would stick open? Not sure just my guess.

Now after checking the vacuum lines, and fixing things back to stock position. The car doesn’t even run as good as it did. Any ideas?

I am going to take that vacuum line off this afternoon and see if that gets it back to were it was. If not then I will put that back and hook the linkage back up, the wrong way…. Just to atleast try to trouble shoot the problem and see where exactly its coming from.

www.sterlingmetalworks.com Head over there, and read everything. Sterling is our resident expert on these carbs, and he's put together all kinds of writeups and tutorials. If all else fails, he also has a forum where you can ask him questions. A great source for troubleshooting these carbs.

Oh, and the part you are referring to is commonly called the "teeter totter".

Been there done that. I always check the easy and obvious places for information first, and hardly ever have to post. Well, not this time.

Could you atleast confirm i have the "teeter totter" hooked up correctly now?

Thanks
