82 - 89 Brake change

I am about 3/4 done with my brake conversion to the 5 lug and have run into a problem. I have the front rotors. I tought that they were the same as my 82 with the bearings inside the rotor. are the rotors for the second gen 5 lug different. Are the bearings enclosed in the hubs and the rotors just bolt onto the hubs,

Thanks for the help

Yes, the '89 has separate hubs and brake discs. The design you have on your '82 is called "integral". To complete your conversion, you'll need the FC hubs and bearings -- at least the inboard ones, which are larger than your FB inboard bearings. The outboard bearings are common, so you could conceivably use the ones you already have. I prefer to keep used bearings and races matched, so I'd go with all FC.

All of the kits I have seen for doing this swap, include a special adapter to go on the 84-85 spindle.
The 79-83 uses a smaller inner bearing that the 84-85, and the 84-85 inner bearing is smaller than the FC. I believe the outer bearing is the same on all SA/FB/FC.

As far as I know you need 84-85 gsl-se spindles and then get the RE speed kit and use the spacer that slides over the spindle for the second gen bearing to work.

Message RE-Speed and see if they could make you the spacer, it'll be worth the money at this point. Changing spindles is quite a bit of work and you need lotsa tools to change over the springs and shocks. Not to mention finding those Gsl-se spindles.
