Is the 81 and SE driveshaft the same?

My 84 SE's rear universal is bad and since I cannot change just the universal in that car I was wondering if the driveshaft from my 81 parts car would work. New universals for the 81 are about 20 dollars from mazdatrix, and I think that is much better than 200 for a new driveshaft.

IIRC the GSL-SE flange is different from the earlier 79-83 cars, so the driveshaft will not interchange.

Curious, how did you find out it was the rear ujoint? Was it making a clunk noise each time you shifted?

Buy their driveshaft with the replaceable U-joints. I talked to a few people a while ago before I bought a driveshaft and they recommended that one. Even though it's still pricey, it pays off the next time when you only have to replace a u-joint and NOT a whole driveshaft.

i have several good used ones $60.00 plus shipping

the problem with the replacable type u-joints is that they go bad quicker...the oe. type lasts the longest!

Mazdatrix said if you have vibrations in first gear it is the front univesal that is bad and if you have vibrations increasing with speed it is the rear universal.

680RWHP12A Do you know how many miles are on those driveshafts and are they for the 84?
