8" rim, GSL REAR, offset and tire combo

NOTE: this is regarding REAR fitment on a GSL rear

Alright, I've searched and searched and keep getting mixed signals.

I'm re-drilling the axles to 5x114.3 and putting on some bigger brakes and tires.

The wheels I want (in a perfect world) are limited for fitment, to say the least...

I want to fit a 17x8 +20, because that is what is available. I Don't care what tire, but I don't want to stretch if I don't have to. As wide as possible but ZERO rubbing. I've grinded away a bit of the fender, but don't want to roll it completely

By measurement, calculation and my own experience, they won't fit. I had a 15x7 Kosei;s (Which I THOUGHT were +17 , I don't know for sure) and they rubbed with a 205-60-15. The difference in fitment is attacked below

A 17x8 with a 215/40/17 gives a 5.3" backspace. That leaves me with 2.7" to an 8 inch rim, but they're usually more like 9". I don't see how it will fit.

BUT Rota sells an RB in 4x110 in 15x8 4x110, +20. And I KNOW some guys have fit 8" tires under these things. So WHAT GIVES>? Is the smaller sidewall enough to let it tuck?

I'll be running a reasonably stiff spring, but intend to run as low as I can before the watts link binds.

Will a 17x8 +20 fit? WIth what tire?

IF NOT, there's also a 17x8 +40 available for the the wheels I want to run. how big a tire can I get under there? I assume a 5-10mm spacer would be in order to center it properly...

Thanks for the help guys. I'm getting close to order time so I can finish a few other things!
