8.8 or 9 " ford rears ???

i got a gsl-se with s5t2 motor in it and i want to get a ford rear before i break another rear end. my question is after the ford rear put in does it push the tires out, or do i have to get cut and shortened. and the second part is does the drive shaft have to be customized???

Drive shaft needs to be custom. Here is your best bet, I know I, and a couple other members are going this route.

I would recommend going with the 8.8" diff. The 9" is straddle mounted which is nice, but the extra weight that it adds is not worth it. Unless your making HUGE torque, go with the 8.8" with the overhung design, and it should meet your needs.

Danas are huge axles and quite heavy. Way way overkill for a 2400lb car with little torque

all 8.8 diffs need to be shortened to properly fit in the first gen.

1st generation bronco 9"s apparently fit without shortening, but they are rare and expensive because they are almost all nodular cases which are the strongest and sought after.

Personally I think the granny's diff kit is overpriced, you can to it much cheaper, but you pay for the fabrication time you save.

My brother bought a Bronco 9" for his Chevy II and it barely fits under there, You would need a lot of backspacing with your wheels to fit one under a first gen I would think. He paid $300 for his though with a a trac-lok and 3.50 gears.
