if you have a 1979-80 car, the tranny from 81 up will fit but the shifter will be off. you need to modify the shifter or get a 79-80 specific tranny. you also need a 79 manual flywheel. pedals and a few other things

My understanding is:

You cannot use an SA shifter on an FB tranny at all - - they mount to the trans completely differently. You will need to replace the auto flywheel with an engine-year-matched flywheel and clutch, and you will need the manual pedal assembly, cultch master, slave, and hardline plus brackets.

The shifters on 81+ cars mounted a couple inches further to the rear than did the shifter on the 78-80 cars. Otherwise they are virtually identical.

Your FB-series trans will "fit" in the car, but the shift lever and shift tower will not fit within the stock interior shift surround, and you may need to trim the hole in the top of the trans tunnel in order to get proper clearance for the shifter tower.
