79 gs with 63,000 miles good deal?

i have recently found a very clean 79 with 63,000 miles, no rust and seemingly no problems. the guy selling it is the second owner and has had it for 18 years. he seems to take care of it fairly well. engine runs smooth, everything works properly. are there any downfalls to the 79's i should know about, i used to have an 85 gs, and i know the 79's are a little more crude, but other than that are there any trouble areas with them. he is asking 3,000. i did check the whole car over too and everything is in very good condition which is very rare for wisconsin. but just wondering what you guys thought, and if it was a good deal or not. oh yeah it is a 5-speed and tranny feels like its new, the clutch was just replace at like 53,000 miles also.

thanks for the help,
kyle

Damn 63K miles on a 79 and those have the lightest body that I know off. Plus you said the car is in good condition and it drivers good. Hmm..... I think is hard to say because for 3K you can get your self a very good GSL-SE in almost the same amount of condition I think. However, I would till offer lower and if you really want it badly then go for it. It sound like you found a very good car. I let the experts here tell you better but that is just my opinion. Good luck with that. I never got to find a 79 in a good condition like the one you discribe.

check for rust in the rear wheel wells and under the storage bins, also on the underbody follow the pinch welds under the doors to the front of the rear wheels. if he's got a spare tire inside pull that out and look there also. make sure the car isn't warm when you drive it, you wanna see how it starts/runs when it's cold. You don't want him to try and mask any problems . Other than that drive it hard, no obscene noises, brakes, steering slop, etc. oh make sure the exhaust isn't falling apart.

3000 does sound a little high but it's hard to say, especially when your in love with it from the moment you drive it.

63k miles is pretty damn low, but $3000 is pretty high. DJAngelicon is right. You can get a fuel injected, higher HP GSL-SE in similar condition for about the same price (althought the mileage would be higher). Also, I think the 79's use points in the ignition which ain't that good, but I guess you could change to an electronic one if you wanted. Bottom line is, if you really like the 79's then I guess that's not too much. And, don't forget to check for the usual engine oil leaks etc. it would be odd to find an RX-7 that old with no leaks!

Hey, go for it!!! But three grand is a little pricey. Other than the pionts, the exhaust is the only other "need to change" stuff. Offer the guy $1500, and see if he will get close. You never know unless you ask!

If the car is pristine with everything completely original (including the thermal reactor, exhaust and interior) with absolutely no rust, perfect body perfect interior, $3000 might be worth it, and then if you want to keep it in its pristine condition. Otherwise you can buy lots of car for less.

everything, i mean everythign is original, it has a new exaust but thats about it, it leather is still perfect, and so is everything else, i just wondering if 3000 was too much, i thought it was, cuz i paid 300 for my 85 and the wheel wells are perfect, solid, and so are the storage bins, it is truly a perfect 79 there is a little rust in the engine bay, but i would imagine that is normal, thanks for all the input tho, it has been very useful.

thanks,
kyle

I think all of these responses are aimed at the "how much car can you get for your money" angle, which is valid. But, sometimes a car is worth more money just because it's been kept original and in great condition. This sounds like one of those cases to me. Of course, I have a bit of an agenda here. My '79 is almost completely original, is in great shape, and has 53,5xx original miles on it. I'd like to think it's worth a hell of a lot more than $3000. It definitely is worth a lot more than that to me.
