6 1/2" speakers in 85 GSL doors?

has anyone installed speakers in their doors? i have a 85 gsl, and am looking into throwing some speakers in there, preferably bottom front...im hoping to get 6 1/2" inthere, but 5 1/4" will do. anyone done it? i did a search, but didn't see anyone who has done it to an S3 gsl or -se.

i assume i will have to make spacers.

i built custom door pods to fit 5 1/4" in my 85 gs i had years back, the car had manual windows, and there wasn't much room, but it was possible. im hoping that witgh the pwr. windows, there should be more room

I put 5.25" component sets in my door panels. Worked with my uncle to make the wood baffles that make the speakers mount flush with the pocket. If I ever get back into putting a system ini her I will get new door panels and do it better. I am confident that 6.5" speakers will fit as well. I also have my tweeters flush mounted further up the door panel now. Here's the pics from over a year ago:

You shouldn't have any problems with GSL door panels. Power windows will definitely free up some space. On my GS panels the 6.5" would probably fit perfect right on the bottom front corner where the 5.25" are. THe pocket would just have to be cut more. I'd say get an extra pair of door panels in case something goes wrong or you don't like how it is when you're done so you can swap a new pair back in.

Higher up you'll have to build the baffle further out since the metal behind the panel is much closer to the panel the higher up you go. Keep the speakers down, but try to build the baffle where it points the speakers toward you. That will give you good leg room and sound.

I put my 4.5"s higher up since there is already a perfect hole in the door skin.A good pair of 4's will sound as good as 6's.I run Fosgate and Polk for my midrange/tweets.

I put 6.5" components with 1" tweets in my SE doors, I cut the door skin and mounted an 3/4" mdf baffle and deadened the door and clay'd around the baffle, I then cut a whole in the door pannel, put it back together and mounted the speaker and screwed it through the door pannel into the MDF.

Very solid and great sound, much better then the 4" ankle mounted speakers!

with 150rms per side it gets louder then you would ever want, but headroom is good, right?

I'll take some pics sometime soon.

where exactly did you mount them? that sounds exactly like what i would like to do. and is the mdf baffle underneath the door panel rather than on top?

I mounted them close to the front of the pannel in the middle of the door with the tweeter above.

Yes the MDF is below and isn't seen.

I have CDT 4" speakers in the same location as Steve, but I actually put mine underneath the door panel so you can't see them. I'm thinking of making a little piece of wood with some holes drilled in it, and then putting holes in the door panel; then, I'd glue the wood piece to the panel. That way, the cloth on the door panel isn't vibrating back and forth as much. It will also cut down on any baffling. I have my tweeters attached to my dash right where the A-pillar meets the dash, but I'd like to do a cleaner install on them.

I have CDT 6.5"s in the back holes, and I'm currently building a speaker box to hold another pair of CDT 6.5"s and a pair of Pioneer 6x9s that I have. I'm also contemplating a box to fit my Solobaric L7 8" in the tailight area. I dunno yet, though. That sub may be a bit too much for my musical tastes.

I personally don't like the idea of having speakers showing in plain site, but I guess I'll have to deal with my 6.5s and 6x9s showing in the back.

I had those mass market 6x9 boxes put behind the carpet. Worked real nice!
