3000 idle

Intros 1st, names Barry go by Bare. Joined the club a few months ago-I have a '79 and two '87 TII's-love all the info here. I've checked the archives and done the searches and can't find exactly what I'm after so here goes. I got the '79 a while ago (unfit), the carbs been rebuilt but the only way it starts consistantly is by pouring gas down the carb while cranking it over. When it does start, the idle shoots to about 3000 rpm. It can rev higher but it won't drop below that. I can't even drop the rpm's manually with any linkage I can find. Any ideas? BTW I'll try to keep the posts shorter next time.

what kind of carb are you using? sounds to me like a sticky throttle plate or something to do with the dashpot. perhaps more info..
