300 amp Large Case GM alternator Installed

I just bolted up a large case GM alternator on my 12A 1983 RX7. I modified the stock bracket and used a longer threaded bolt on that bracket. I modified the stock bracket by hammering it flat. I have a spare stock bracket for when I sell the car and put the stock alternator back on it.

I just need to wire up the external voltage regulator, set the voltage output, and take it for a spin.

I am not an alternator guy, but just judging by relative dimensions, I would say this is the largest alternator you can fit without too much modification. I got my alternator from Iraggi Alternators a few years ago through a group buy. A google search turned up an ebay seller account under his name.

Pics coming shortly.

Jesus, 300amp?

My stocker is holding up fine, though I notice the voltage go lower when music + air + headlights.

I used a taurus alt in my old FC, they can get higher outputs and would probably fit a FB fine, it fit my S5 FC and even the stock connector worked, S5 alts work on FBs so I'm pretty sure..

Sooo you planning on running anything awesome to draw that 300amps?

hydrogen generator cell! the amount of hydrogen you could make with 300 amps at 12vs would be just shy of what it would take to run the car at idle on pure hydrogen.. lol.

What year Taurus did you get the alternator out of? I'm tired of dimming headlights.

I believe its the 94 V6 or so years

Just go to autozone website or whatever and search for taurus alts then look at the fc alts, if it looks the same should work, its got liek 100amp i think.

Oh and it has a serpentine belt or whatever it's called, just put the old alt pulley on and you're golden

I did forget to mention that I originally had this alternator on a 2000 mustang with a custom mounting bracket. The mustang was 5 rib serpentine. I pulled that pulley off and found a large diameter double V pulley off of a random old rear wheel driven car in the junkyard. The pulley works fine and had the right shaft diameter, but the sections are spaced to far apart to let me run double belts. I'll search for another junkyard pulley that has less spacing when it's not 93 degrees outside.

This shows the double pulley I put on and the stock alternator bracket that I simply hammered flat to make fit.

This is the rear of the alternator. The top black and purple wires are going from the positive lead on the battery to the positive output on the alternator. The orange stuff on the terminals is some high temperature gasket material that I threw on to insulate the connection. To the right of it is the Black Field connection with a blue wire connected to it that goes to my external voltage regulator. The regulator lets me set my voltage up to 20 Volts for more output from electrical devices, like amplifiers and ignition systems. Directly beneath the positive terminal is a handy bolt that simply threads into the back of the alternator that allows me to ground the alternator chassis directly to the negative terminal on my battery and to my strut tower.

I competed a couple of years ago in DB Drag and still have some equipment left over. The amp and regulator are part of that stash. I've also got a class A/B 4000 watt amplifier. It's fused at 400 amps alone. I've also got an old Atomic APXX quad .5ohm coil subwoofer. I'm thinking about reconing it and rebasketing it into an 18. I've also got an old school high current lanzar amp, one of the gray ones, before they started selling garbage, along with an old school U.S. Amps high current amp with a nice plexiglas bottom so you can see the work that went into the guts.

S4 FC alts bolt right on the FBs. S5 alts take a little alterations.

The 13.61 is Volts, not amps. That's also at idle. I've got it set to go up to 15.0 volts at about 2500 RPM. I could set it higher, but the battery I currently have in there starts to boil over at anythng higher. I ran my mustang at 16 Volts daily, but I also had a new sealed battery in it.

The alternator body is called a Large Case GM unit... so I would start looking in GM vehicles. I think if you checked older larger GM trucks, Vans, and specifically ambulances you should find one. I've heard that ambulances come stock with a higher output alternator AND double belt pulley.

This particular alternator came from Iraggi Alternators. The owner is Dom - dominick@tds.net . I bought mine during a group buy and got a 30% discount because of the huge number of people that bought alts at the same time.

Actually, I found an old email with all the info in it:

Dominick Iraggi of Iraggi Alts did his group buy a month ago and took 30% off of his normal price. My 300 amp alt was down to about 326 shipped and the additional external voltage regulator was only 60.00. The 300 amp Large Case GM alt will fit the 4.6 motor, not sure about the v6. I recommend taking a look at the two and seeing if the mounts and spacing are close. I'll show you mine at the show tomorrow. You have to grind whatever bracket they send you, and they may tell you that the GM alt won't fit.

that's the link on Dominick's group buy. It's over, but if you ask him really nice and tell him Bobby with the mustang sent you, he might still give you the discount. I like his support and I've put about 3000 miles on the product without issue or failure. Everytime I call, the dude answers the phone, personally. No bs about his dog dying or his mom's pregnant or any other unneccessary bs.

Even if you don't buy from him, he will still tell it like it is. Good Guy.

That was back in early 2006. I'm still running that same alternator today. He offers a lifetime warranty option on his alts that includes free replacement. He also offers a lifetime upgrade option. That means when you buy a new vehicle and want a high output alternator for it, send him your old alternator and he sends you a new high output alternator that fits your new vehicle.

Here are some sick, sick, sick pics of his work:

And the way it's connected to the battery terminals is awesome.
