2nd gen transmission in 1st gen
2nd gen transmission in 1st gen
If you are going to put a 2nd gen standard in, you have to put the 1st gen tail shaft on to make the shifter line up. According to the directions indicated in the archive, one of the shifter rods needs to be drilled 3cm up so that you can shift into 3rd. Which rod is this? The 2nd gen rod or the 1st gen rod?
well, since ur modding a 2nd gen tranny's shifter position to fit a 1st gen, wouldn't it be safe to say they're talking about the 2nd gens shifter rod? i would think so. it's the same rod i shortened and redrilled and tapped to put an '83 tranny into my rx3 to retain the original shifter position.
The 2nd gen shifter rod needs to be cut and drilled about an inch short.
Then you also have to shorten the tube that the selector rod runs through, pretty easy.
After that, the 2st gen shifter tower will bolt right up.
Then its just a matter of a little crossmember/mount massaging and having a driveshaft made up(if you use a TII box)

I have a problem with the custom driveshaft thing. If you're using the 1st gen tailshaft to get the shifter to the same spot, the distance from the tailshaft to the diff isn't changed at all. So besides strength, what's the point in a custom length driveshaft? You're also retaining the exisiting output shaft splines, and the pinion isn't being changed either.

The only 1st gen part you use is the shifter tower, not the tailcone.
For an N/A FC trans you might not have to mod the driveshaft. It depends on if the 2nd gen N/A trans is longer overall then the FB trans.
