2nd gen radiator instal question
I have my radiator mounted but i don't have the sensor that goes the the bottom of the radiator. I don't know what it is, i know that there was one on the 1st gen radiator but its not the same size... do u guys know what it is?

i have the radiator sitting in there with the top tilted towards the engine, im guessing it will cool better b/c its triple core instead of single. I decided to replace my old one b/c it leaked and a sensor was bad and since no one in town had the 1st gen i decided to go ahead and go to the second... i'll post some pics in the next day or 2... its not the cleanest instal but it works

+1 for the pics.
i have a second gen koyo and a mount someone made to mount a second gen radiator slanted in a first gen but it doesnt work. the bottom tube on the radiator hits the engine mount. my set up is with the bottom towards the engine. id like to see how itd look with the top towards the engine.

In general, you really want to mount the radiator so that the top is tilted towards the front of the vehicle / away from the engine. Because heat rises, the air movement due to convection will bring hot air through the radiator in the same direction as the air flow due to the fan/driving. If the radiator is tilted the other way, convection opposes the air flow, reducing the effectiveness of the radiator. (Also, just tilting the radiator in general reduces the cooling effectiveness, but sometimes it's necessary to make it fit )

I once used a rad from a turbo eclipse with electric fans. It worked great. Its shorter than a second gen rad but a little wider. Had to put the battery in the back to make it fit. I leaned it a little forward too. It kept everything nice ande cool!

The 2nd gen radiator fits fine mounted in a straight up and down vertical position. Daaam near the same dimensions and looks OEM. Besides cutting the brackets off the 1st gen radiator, biggest problem I ran into is whichever one it is (S4 or S5..?) that has that extended filler neck off to the drivers side, it gets totally in the way of re-mounting the stock 1st gen fan shroud, but if you already know this no problem. You need to grab the radiator that has the filler cap centered on the top.

Did the tilted FC radiator mod a while back.
It fit fine when tilted forward with custom mounts and a little sheetmetal trimming.
Looked cool, but didnt see much/any gain in cooling performance.
Not substantially lighter.
Brass and copper actually cools better than aluminum and FB radiators can be repaired when they leak.
Not many repair shops will touch an aluminum and plastic radiator that leaks.
Ended up replacing the FC radiator with a Howe dual pass race radiator. Its all aluminum and fully welded, so repairs if needed, are possible. The dual pass really helps with cooling and Howe gladly customizes their products for specific applications, like the low coolant sensor and heater hose fitting.

$282 for the radiator
$20 for the shipping
$0 for the custom work
The radiator was in my hands, 3 days after faxing my request w/dimensions....damn fine service and its been totally up to the task for almost 4 years now.
