1st gen as hero's steed

I'm writing a script for an indie film featuring modded low-litre racers (RX-7s, Integras, S2000s, 350Z track, etc) - think F&F but with an actual plot, not a warmed over version of Point Break.

Thing is, I'm at a plot point where the hero re-enters the racing scene after huge setbacks (can't say too much about the plot of an unfinished script online - that has a habit of turning into "parallel development" and some studio comes out with their own version). He decides to pour most of his budget into mods and creating a sexy yet outwordly-modest Q-ship. A VW Jetta is too boxy, and I'm biased, so I'd like the hero's "revenge car" to be a 1st gen with an impossibly intimidating engine - I'm thinking turbo 20B - and modded suspension, steering, exhaust, everything.

"Quattro Nosa" with actual actors, not buddies of the writer/director/producer.

would you guys believe such a car kicking *** in races, or would it come across with the 'yeah right' feel of F&F??

sounds interesting..

i think it depends on how much time ur giving him to build this car, with F&F they seemed to have rebuilt that totaly f**K supra in about 2 days thats with beating, spraying etc ....

aslong as u make it seem believeable i dont think that, that car would seem too over the top and make people think u have an endless budget and are just making an unbeatble car..

good luck with it

I'm picturing him having about $30K and wanting to put it, as I said, into parts, so he starts with a cheap chassis (a 3rd gen with mods zooms past the 30K budget mark much quicker, for instance)

Beating and painting that car as an overnight project in F&F bugged me, but so many other things in that movie were over the top it fit right in

the best bit in that movie which i still laugh at, its dam funny that his floor can fall out during the race but in the next shot vin desele gets in the passenger side and has no truble sitting there with no floor under him

but back to ur flick

a good 3rd gen is still over $40au over here, so yeah modding that with $30us would seem over ove the top..

what about something like a S4 or S5?

if you chose one with a full mariah body kit "even the wheel well flares" then I think the car will much more look the part.

it would also let people know that our cars can look very racey and modern as well as go very fast.

Deus Ex Machina plot points aside, your biography of Chef sounds interesting...

The 1st gen is the ultimate start-with-nothing-but-junk car. It's the car that you scrounge parts for because you're poor, not because you have 30K. If I had 30K I'd be working up a staight FD chassis and a 20B.
Lower the hero's budget drastically, making him a beg-borrow-but-not-steal fellow who's also an obsessive & imaginative custom fabricator, and you'll be free of the F&F fantasy stigma.

Don't do it! The last thing we need is more ricers buying SA/FB's, or people associating first gens with stupid ******* street racing. Leave the first gens for the underground!

No offense, but street racing, and movies glorifying street racing, are both gay as ****.

Sounds like a fun and challenging project.

The general public knows diddly about the RX-7, and any "rotor" references might best be used as a vague underground insider's secret. People are unfamiliar with - and intimidated by - rotary engines. And that's weird.. and funny. But you can use that psychology to give it a "cool" factor.

Just the other day, a piston guy was puzzled as he looked at my stock GSL-SE, and finally asked me what kind of Z car it is. Ah... where to begin..

wide body and 20b sounds cool,

should be NA if its a 20b, for cost purpose.

whatever you do, make the car really unique.

I'm with Jeremy, give the hero a 240Z with a Skyline engine and keep the first gens "underground".

BTW I'm thinking racing, not street (or drag) racing...

and not to get owly, but as I said I want the guy to put money into parts and build a Q-ship - a body kit is the opposite of that, just changing looks to something more "aggressive" without adding an ounce of speed.

Just thought about this. At the end of the movie you can have your hero ride off into the sunset in victory, and then you hear an ungoddly sound coming on strong only to see a sweet first gen stomp a hole in the Z, thus giving you a reason to make a sequal.

First gen, 20B or even custom 26B, prefer N/A, but turbo might be intresting. No bodykits if not needed, maybe a front airdam and rear wing, for downforce. Get the guy spending the money on parts, so we can see plenty of nice tech-shots, underbonnet views and stuff like that :-)
Oh, one thing: if you don't give him a first gen, we must kick you off the forum, so forget about Z cars. We ain't gonna watch a Nissan are we??? The Seven rules, and only the first gens are real sevens!!! And now, post this on the 2nd and 3rd gen forum, so I can **** some people off :-)

i'm not really 'in' many, as I'm a director not an actor, and even then I'm still low on the totem pole working my way up. I'm currently working on a vampire flick for Universal, but it's a tiny project with a large studio so it's likely to go into 'turnaround' at someone's whim. I've just finished writing a short film comedy about a serial killer that should be broadcast online soon.

If you're genuinely interested in my film stuff check out www.wigglepup.com from time to time.

But anywho, back to the topic:

I'm trying to create a race film that's exciting and dramatic but without all the errors of F&F (keep in mind it'll likely be shot on a Quattro Nosa budget) I thought 1st gen RX-7 would be a good 'comeback car' as it doesn't look like much to ricers, but pops up at SCCA, SSCC, and other racing events quite pften as a cheap platform on which to build a pocket rocket.

I'll be including domestics, but mainly hopped-up low litres like Ford Foci, Neon Whateveritscalled Turbo, etc. stuff supposedly fast, even if it is FWD, because that's what I see in the low litre race scene.

yeah, but for drag racing, not drifting.

'sides, I'm looking to make a Fast & Furious style movie, not Days of Thunder.

holy ****, i didn't think you were alive anymore.
Same here, lol

And Manntis, you should use a car similar to AJC13Bs, DirectFreaks, or Mike-P-28s as the "after car" then use your own or something for the "before". That way, you dont need to actually "create" the "after" car for underhood shots and stuff, it really WILL be there . Plus, if you had a budget to build the "after" car, you can use it to help along/finish the project of whoevers car your chose...That way if you chose DF cars, you could give him the money to finish it so it can be in the movie, or if its Mikes, you could give him the money to have it dyno tuned and stuff...Just a though...Pluss it would help out the first gen scene...

~T.J.

PS - Oh yeah, and put an rx7club.com sticker on the FB in the movie

I don't have to worry about building or not building the car for the movie - That's up to the production design crew and the extent of real versus 'suggested' parts comes down to budget...

Datsun 240Zs are incredible cars, but they belong with inline 6 boingers like RX-7s belong with rotaries
