1984 GSL-SE stereo noise when using cassette...

Hope one of you guys may have come across this before....

I've had the RX for a couple of years and never used the tape deck. Took the first drive of the season tonight and brought along some AC/DC. As soon as you put the tape in, there is a loud hum out of the speakers. You can overcome it by really turning up the volume, but I'd rather fix it. There is also a hum from the speakers when the power antenna is going up which stops once the antenna stops.

Anybody got any ideas or come across this before? I'm guessing I need a noise filter somewhere. I can't believe it came from the factory like that....

Its just the player. I think I remember from years ago this happens if the deck gets too heavily magnetized, but I'm grasping here Dave.

I'm guessing the noise with the antenna is actually unrelated. I'm betting its just electrical noise from the power antenna motor.

I'll see if anybody comes up with an answer, but will keep your kind offer in mind.

The casette deck is actually a separate piece - they're stacked, not one monoblock of electrics like Chrysler's Infiniti stereos.

Sounds like one of the wires in back, or perhaps even in the player, isn't making full contact or is short circuiting. You know how if you partly unplug your speaker jack from your computer you'll hear a hum? Same idea. Because it's isolated to the casette deck, it's either a wire going from the deck to the amp or something inside the deck itself.

Ok, something worth checking. I'll try and contort this old body back under there tomorrow and check for loose wires/connections. Since I spent 8 hrs a couple of weeks ago changing a broken vent mechanism, me and the under dash, are not the best of friends! lol.
