Talking 1984 GSL-SE - Has sat for 6 years...

1984 GSL-SE was given to me by the original owner's grandson. This guy's grandmother bought it off the lot new in 1984! When I opened the glovebox, sitting in a protective plastic bag I found ALL the ORIGINAL paperwork for the car! I mean everything from the dealer's option list to the original loan contract from the lady's credit union and the warranty for the tires from Pirelli ! I was extatic, Unfortunately though It has sat for 6 years because the grandmother never got it fixed after the clutch went out, due to buying a new car.

So far i put in a battery and it gets power, but many of the electric systems won't work...

As far as engine-wise it needs :
1. Master and slave cylinders for the clutch system
2. Master cylinder for the brakes
...this is to to them rusting from corrosion and extended disuse
3. Radiator, Hoses, Thermostat, Gasket
4. Clutch


What i would like to know is are there any special precautions i should take after replacing these things before I attempt to start it up the first time, aside from a full tune-up and fluid change? It has 165k original miles. Is there a possibility that the motor is seized after sitting for so long?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Everyone!

I would be dodgey about starting it full stop........

I would change oil and oil filter as well, as it has been sitting way to long......

Chances are it may have seized due to Carbon Lock if you search you will find lots of information regarding this and how to fix it.

Maybe get some carby cleaner as well as that may have seized up.

my 84 GSL has sat for almost 7 years now... but it didn't have a motor in it when i bought it, so not an issue lol... but all the electronics work, rebuilt the clutch slave cylinder, so clutch works, might need to rebuild the master brake cylinder on mine, but i'm not real sure, because my front calipers are locked, so need to rebuild those, then find out how the master brake cylinder works... when i unstuck the brake rotors before i moved the brakes had plenty of hydraulic power, but upon depressing the pedal the calipers stuck again, and upon inspection i found mucho rust on the pistons themselves... yay

also, what electrical systems don't work? more than likely you'll want to clean out the contacts in the combo switch inside the steering column

Any pics. Poor some oil down the spark plug holes and hand crank it, make sure it has gas, take some pictures of it and give the car to me.

When I bought my 85 GSL the owner had it sitting in his yard for 5 years under a tree. I turned the engine by hand to make sure that it would turn, then hooked up the jumper cables and BAM she started right up. After I got her home I went ahead and changed all fluid and other parts like the master cylinders, slave cylinder, fuel filter, and others.

Ok...update as of today i freed up the engine, got it to turn ok, but it gets really hard at one point then frees up again. Is this just because it's hitting the compression stroke? Also had to remove the water pump as it was completely frozen and rusted, one question on that if that rust and little metal bits get past the part where the water pump mates to the front of the motor will it damage it? How do I fix this? any help would be appreciated.

Are the spark plugs out???

if so you may just have a carbon buildup - search as there are a few methods to remove the buildup, not to sure bouth your water pump question, i suggest you flush your radiator though.

and as posted above, drain the gas, put fresh stuff in.

When I had found my first SE, it had sat for about a year (Yes not as long). The lady was tired of putting money into it and the shop she took it to said it needed a motor. Although she said it ran when she parked it, but couldn't get it restated.

I put new plugs in, a good bat and a touch of stating fluid in the spark plugs holes. The damn thing fired right up, smoked like no other and I drove off with a cheap running SE. The smoke cleared and I still have the same motor. It has 190,000 orig. miles. You may get lukly.

Maybe pour some heat gass additive to the gas tank.

But just crank it over and see if it fires. Crank the engine by hand forware and back first. It should move. Grab the bottom pully, it might be hard to turn but it should. This may indicate carbon lock problems and don't crank the car. May break the seal.
