1984 gsl-se fuel pump relay by pass

So my relay doesn't work and a mouse happily chewed the wires going down to the fuel pump and I've rewired my fuel pump and I just want to hook it up to key power. I've wired in an in line fuse and a toggle switch and I made the mistake first of all from wiring it from the cigarette lighter but tried to fire car up and everything worked as should except cigarette lighter doesn't have power when engine is turning over solo just wondering if anyone knows where I can hook it up to.

First off - welcome aboard.

Secondly - my suggestion is that you re-route the stock fuel pump wires to the fuel pump. Trying to wire it into something that's hot with ignition means that the pump will be running anytime the key is in 'Accessory' which will result in constant flooding - and a whole new set of problems.

The case here is that the -SE high-pressure fuel pump is ONLY designed to run when there's air coming in through the Air Flow Meter (AFM). That's why Mazda saw fit to install a switch at the AFM air door to activate the fuel pump. As the engine is cranking, it draws in air, making contact on that switch and then allowing fuel pressure to rise for the startup.

If you wire your fuel pump into something hot, you're sending way too much fuel pressure before the engine starts turning, which will likely result in fuel injector leak-thru and draining down into the engine presenting an overly rich mixture. That will foul the plugs and prevent a good start and you'll have to do the 'de-flood' procedure which involves removing spark plugs and other shenanigans just because you didn't want to rewire the stock connection. If a mouse chewed the harness leading to the fuel pump, they usually chew in one location, making hookup that much easier just to splice the wires back together.

Have a look at that solution and post back,

It's been running fine I've been just hooking fuel pump up to battery with jumper cables just to see if she'll run and it runs absolutely perfect and it's never flooded on me and that's why I have a toggle switch wired in there so when I have it on accessories I can just shut it off

Ooooookay.

One of these days you're going to forget it's switched on and be pulling plugs on the side of the road or in a parking lot far from home, but whatever turns your crank. I've only been around here for 13 years, and owned my -SE for 15 or so, and an SA22C for another 10 before that. In that time, I've learned that Mazda designed things a certain way for good reason, usually.
