Question 1982 RX7 that's been sitting.

I have a 1982 RX7 with exactly 100000 miles on it. I bought it new in Nov 1981. I has been sitting beside my home since 92. It has not been started or anyrhing. It worked fine before it was retired. Now my 16 year old son wants to restore it. I know it needs new seats and dash, no biggie. I am pretty sure it needs the carb rebuilt and a new fuel tank (tank leaks). Do you think the engine will need to be rebuilt? If so how much do you think it would coust to have it rebuilt? Thanks

Engine rebuilds do get rather pricey to have it done professionally. However there is a good chance that your car would not need a rebuild at all. If you search this website there are many ways to get a 12A that has been sitting started with little trouble. If your son is serious about restoring it, I would recomend starting with the basics (oil change, battery, carb rebuild, tune-up, etc.) and then see what happens. This site has an amazing amount of information. Especially in the FAQs and the Archives. Read through both and you will learn a lot. Good luck.

Ive also been advised by this board to put some mystery oil in each of the spark plug holes, let it sit for a while, turn the motor by hand and repeat. Helps to loosen up all the carbon buildup and should run better afterwards.

This is going to be my project starting thursday, doing a complete tuneup on a 84rx7 nonturbo. start off with oilchange, spark plugs, air filter, plug wires and dist cap. then drain fluid in tranny and rear axle. Also need to put in a new fuel pump....probably just hook it up to a switch instead of the ignition.
